But again, New York is a different breed of cat and one cannot make projections or assumptions about how well Country might do in The Apple based on how Country performs in any other northeast market.

I do realise this is something of an 'old chestnut', but as well as the popularity of Country in smaller towns in the NorthEast, I'm also stuck by its success in Chicago and (especially) Detroit.

Most of Detroit's country audience is in the northern suburbs of the metro area (especially in Macomb County and parts of Oakland...if your familer with the area). I can gurantee you there are zero country listeners in the city itself.

Ah that makes sense. No I'm not familiar with Detroit or anywhere else much outside the UK.

The reason I find this conversation interesting is that country radio dive-bombed in London, for seemingly similar reasons (too 'urban' a market, too ethnically diverse)

I'm fine with that, but the point still is that in the US, you can have a Top 10 radio station with a 4 share. So the "ethically diverse" thing only matters if you're trying to be #1.

There's a great article in the weekly edition of Country Aircheck that interviews former PD Scott Mahalik. His comments echo those where who complain that the station made changes that alienated the audience, starting with replacing the morning show, and changing the music mix. Consultant Jaye Albright says a key issue is getting a signal that reaches the parts of the region where the audience is likely to live. She says there are only 2-3 signals that could do that.
