Attn WLW Programming

Please, Please, Please, play something different than best of Mike McConnel durring the Reds blackouts on XM173. Use best of the BBC or even a weekend host if available to do an XM only broadcast. Sterling's XM only broadcast was great the first week WLW was on XM. If you did it today and the right topic was used there would be an audience there to provide some listener call ins. However, replaying the show that just ended won't help. Heck, give Kabaka Aba his own XM only show for Reds blackouts...that would be great. Or how about Mo Eggars(sp) and a sports talk show...

WLW annnounced today that McConnell's weekday show is going nationwide on July 31. My guess is that they want to get him as much exposure as possible...that could be the reason he is on XM during the Reds.

I hope you are kidding when you suggested Oba.

First of all, no one is listening to WLW on XM. It's just another thing for CC to sell. But more importantly IMHO, while McConnell is a talent, this is stupidity on their part - WLW is basically the last 24-hour live/local talk station in the "W"s and this seems to be a boneheaded move. Not to mention there's no room for yeeeeeet ANOTHER midmorning ET talker. Surely Premiere won't be distributing a product that competes directly with Glenn Beck (who McConnell subs for)?

This may seem like an unspeakable horror, but if CC wants to syndicate McConnell, he should be on KRC. God knows Tony Snow isn't exactly a huge force.

A bit of a digression: Let's just hope this shooting of Michael Bailey (I refrain for now from using his nickname to avoid the ridiculousness of it for a fleeting moment) doesn't give the criminal element (black or white) a reason to start throwing molotov cocktails. Cincinnati's image is already in the toilet, and mostly for good reason. But it could improve with years of work, and with positive happenings with the Reds and a great team lineup with the Bengals. However, given the seething race relations here, it's just not looking good. And whether you believe his political views or not, God help us if Oba loses the fight for life at the hospital. That's an eerily similar situation to the verdict in 2001 from the Timothy Thomas shooting. And this, less than a week into the police crackdown in OTR? Um... ?

Change of subject: CC isn't going to get rid of Tony Snow on 'KRC. Remember, the tower doesn't like to compete with the brother. As for McConnell and Beck in competition: never going to happen. Glenn Beck's show is an entirely different sound than McConnell. Beck is much more comical and at times juvenile. McConnell's sound is more seasoned. Remember the demos, boys.

Comical, sure... I guess some of us can't put up with Sean Hannity's "comprehensive, critical news and information" for three hours let alone 24/7. Some levity is nice once in awhile. However, it's not as if Beck is on CHR stations - he's on news/talkers and that's the same audience McConnell is going after.

I've heard several callers who used to live here and have moved elsewhere say they're listening on XM. I know it's not a significant addition, but for only being there for 6 weeks, it's getting a bigger bump than I would have thought.

Re: Attn WLW Programming - (Kabaka Oba)

MConnell had said for years that he reisited syndication because it limits the subject matter. After July 31, something like the Kabaka Aba shooting is going to happen and he's not going to be able to talk about it.
______________

And your info comes from where? I live in Atlanta and when I was listening the other day someone called Willie from Wyoming...the state, not the part of Cincinnati.

One big difference though. This is just one more black-on-black crime, which constitutes the majority of the crime in this city. Sad really that more isn't being done within the African American community to address this problem.

I live in Cincinnati and listen to WLW on XM at work for various reasons. Our production manager in our Erlanger facility listens to WLW and NASCAR on his XM reciever as well. The WLW on XM provides great training ground and sales opportunities for Clear Channel as well.

Also I was serious about the late Mr. Bailey hosting an XM only WLW show during Reds games. Oba was perfect for XM talk, controversial, loud mouthed, and not afraid to push lines of decorum. Unfortunately he is another victim of black on black violence in Cincinnati.

Unless something changed since Saturday, I didn't think Mr. Bailey was "late" just yet.
______________

I'm listening to McConnell's Weekend show right now. If this show is an example of what his national show is going to be then Talk Radio must be in the End Days. Only one out of five calls ends up in a legitimate back and forth conversation, and thats only if the caller agrees/confirms McConnell's point of view.

Why do these hosts go out of there way to call their callers idiots and fools?

I agree. Listened to McConnell for about an hour and a half yesterday, had to turn it off after it got too political. I must say though, I have listened to his midday show for almost a year now and have never gotten bored. Going to be interesting to see how much the topicality changes come tomorrow when he goes nationwide on premiere.

Yeah. I've listened to Mike for years and years. I have to say though that with every step towards a larger audience (ie Weekend Show), listening to his show seems to get less and less entertaining or interesting.

I've noticed that on the weekend shows he's using the same 'choice' material and stories from his past. Theres only so many of those stories and pet peeves to use.

I think the national shows are pretty much diminishing the importance of its caller audience. They are just used as props now, to set up monolouges (sp?) for the hosts. Didn't he always say that if he went National there wouldn't be enough topics to talk about and it would be boring?

Hopefully it will open a new niche for local talk shows again.
