Audacity vs. Adobe

Folks,

Looking for some guidance, please...... An AM station has installed iMediatouch and needs to add production software. The standard is, of course, Adobe Audition. However, I've been looking at the open source Audacity program (Windows version and free). Does anyone have experience with Audacity? For radio production purposes, is Audacity a suitable replacement of Adobe? Or does Audacity have limitations that make it less desirable?

Any thoughts are appreciated..

Also, slightly off topic, does anyone know of a "scrub wheel" mouse that can replace a basic mouse? Seems the scrub wheel could make production easier....

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Howdy Chief...

I know from experience that Audacity is fine...it's just not completely professional.

Adobe is a great program ( coming from a Mac user point of view, it's a great program ).

I've used Audacity, but never in a full-on multi-track situation.

As for a scrub wheel mouse, there's a company called Contour Design ( www.contourdesign.com )

They make a couple of different flavors of scrub wheels, with programmable buttons.

Also, they're compatible out of the box with most audio/video programs

I think it even has pre-sets for Adobe Audition...

Check them out!

Hope this helps!

I tried Audacity briefly, but could never seem to get the editing resolution to a comfortable viewing size, so I abandoned it pretty quickly. I'd say it's not intended for the Anal Retentive Editor.

Audacity is superb for what it is...A free program. It does not compare to Audition, however. Now, if you find that Audacity works for your specific needs, by all means, use it! Also, look into Wavosaur, GoldWave and Reaper. Reaper is quickly gaining steam and, I believe, will one day be a major player in audio production.

Chief-

I also use imediatouch at the station I work with and I can tell you go with audition 3.0. Audition is "preferred" by mediatouch because they want you to encode all of your information using Audition so it stays with the file. If you tag spots using the production module, that information stays with the database which can cause some loose segues or bad overlap in autopilot (Kenya tell we talked with them a LOT about this?!!?). If you go to the information button and then the cart tab you can input the spot title (Title), client (Artist), outcue and kill dates and times. Then go to the timers block, select the first one, use the "SEG" funtion, fill in your seg time then save the file as the file number you'll use in the on-air system. Then when you go to import, just grab the wav file and label it as the proper spot number and import...it'll all line up in the boxes where you need it. Nifty thing about this is you CAN'T do it with Adobe Audition 2.0 because when they wrote the software, they DIDN'T write in the use of the Timers box. They DID with 3.0
