Audacy Announces New Alternative Leadership

It was only a matter of time before it became official. Mike Kaplan left a lot of wreckage and several poorly performing Alternative stations that got flipped. Betting on pop when the trends were already turning away from pop was just the beginning of his mistakes. Betting on nationalizing talent not suited for it was perhaps the bigger one. Robbing most stations of their identities was another one.

Mike Kaplan probably would have some semblance of talent as a CHR/Hot AC programmer. But I suspect after this catastrophe he won't get hired by a major radio company ever again. This was a historic collapse he presided over, and now Audacy has to pick up the pieces under Kevin Weatherly.

It was only a matter of time before it became official.

It was made official in October.

Inside Radio has confirmed that WNYL PD Mike Kaplan will be leaving the company later this year. Audacy decline to comment on the future of the station’s airstaff. However, since some are heard in other Audacy markets is it reasonable to assume that some will remain with the company.

It's the same programmers who've been in place for a while for most if not all of the mentioned stations, minus Kaplan. Their duties have simply been reconfigured a bit. I'll let those who are more knowledgeable on these matters than me determine if anyone was quietly purged to be replaced by the individuals mentioned.

We now know Weatherly is the top man in charge, though. Perhaps that explains the highly repetitious gold rotations that I'm hearing on 98.7 in Detroit. Same 250 or so songs day after day for weeks if not months on end. Stations like 99X sound so much better to my ears!

The bio of Steiner is hilarious; WZRH was "a regional success" under his stewardship? Give me a break; its ratings were abysmal both before and after the hurricane. If that station bills more than, say, $1.5 million a year, I'd be very surprised.
