Audacy bets on WEEI..AM

People in states that prohibit sports betting have never had more options for doing so anyway, and none involve interstate travel.

Betting...good news for WEEI AM 850 (BetQL)...
WHDH-TV: "State lawmakers have reached an agreement to legalize wagering on professional and collegiate sports in Massachusetts during a session that went overnight Sunday into early Monday morning.
The agreement was announced by Speaker of the House Representative Ron Mariano on Twitter early Monday morning..
Some lawmakers said this legalization of sports betting would benefit the state’s economy tremendously....Governor Charlie Baker has said in the past that he supports sports betting and hoped he would have a bill to sign."

Even if this happens, and it probably will, nothing is going to help AM850 be anything more than a .1 player in the 6+ numbers.

There are already more well established media offerings including shows on cable sports networks that cover the same topic but with flashy graphics.

IMHO MA is only doing this to grab the tax revenue from winnings in the face of the lottery games having reduced revenues.

And what's wrong with that? Sports betting is available, or soon to be available, in all bordering states but Vermont. It doesn't matter how the lottery his doing; sports betting is an easily tapped revenue stream that Massachusetts has refused to tap for far too long. This gambling revenue will, overall, supplement the lottery money. It's not a zero-sum game. People aren't going to stop buying $10 worth of scratch tickets every time they go to the convenience store and put $10 on the Red Sox vs. Toronto instead. The potential reward for the lottery bet(s) is much higher.

I know in some of the early stuff I was reading the tax rate was higher than the surrounding states.
So I need details on that

I wonder if WEEI FM will now add to their programming to take advantage of this ?
They have less to lose than BZ

The total handle (money bet) is going to be subject to a 15-17 percent tax (withholding) which will be reflected in odds offered and subsequent payouts. It's slightly less than the "takeout" on horse racing. But yes, it's higher than New Hampshire's or Connecticut's. The average Joe who just wants to bet on sports legally won't be aware of that.

I think WHDH-AM should switch to Traditional Catholic radio programming. Latin Mass every day live from a certain church in Boston and teaching programs the rest of the day. How about the Rosary and other devotions like Vespers?

How about combining formats and attracting more listeners through legalizing internet wagering on church bingo games!?!? 🤑 🤑 🤑

Boston has not one but two Catholic stations...

1060 WQOM with programming from EWTN Radio.

1150 WWDJ with programming from Relevant Radio.

Of course 850 hasn't had the WHDH calls since 1994 when WEEI sports talk moved over from 590, and a board op inserted a toilet flush after the WHDH calls were aired for the last time...well, actually the calls lasted a bit longer.
Been awhile now.

"It proved to be the last format change for WHDH. In mid-1994, ARS announced its purchase of the programming and call letters of Back Bay Broadcasting's WEEI 590. The change came in late August; Friday, August 26 was the last weekday for WHDH, and on the last live program, talk host Howie Carr took to the sidewalk outside 7 Bulfinch Place to auction off the contents of the WHDH studios for charity. At midnight, August 28, the last WHDH programming came to an end, and an anonymous board operator sent the station to the history books with a recorded toilet flush. The next morning, WEEI's sports programming made its debut on 850 (although technically, the WHDH calls remained in place for several more days while the paperwork was completed)."
