Audio "Burps"...help!

Hello, fellow audio/VO comrades!

I was wondering if I might solicit some h-e-l-p! I've been experiencing some weird audio "burps" lately. I record using Vegas, along with a Layla sound card. These "stammers"...slowing down/speeding up dilemmas... have been, quite frankly, driving me crazy! I don't think I've mistakenly changed sampling rates or anything...but I find myself having to re-record things alot lately!

I've posted a small sample....one "take" normal (or, as normal as I've ever been accused of...) and the other with the "burp". Any suggestions? Is it "me"? Do I have sound card issues? ???? H-E-L-P! Here's the file:

Thanks for any assistance!

Matt,

You need to tell us a little more about your system...

What operating system?
How much RAM do you have?
Are you using an external hard drive?
How much hard drive space do you have available?
When was the last time you defragged your hard drive?
When was the last time you ran chkdsk on your hard drive?
What else was running at the time?
What anti-virus package is running?
Have you run Windows Update lately?

All of these things - and other that I've likely forgotten - impact the kind of problem you describe.

You're right...good points.

I'm running Vegas on a Dell desktop using XP. I do have a WD external drive, but it's mainly to hold imaging discs and prod libraries. I run Vegas off the C Drive (229 gb, a little more than half available), with a Pentium 4 and a gig of RAM. I usually have Outlook open, and I have the incoming mail sound disabled, as that has "affected" audio from time to time. I'm also using Norton anti-virus. I de-fragged about 3 weeks ago, and the "analysis" says that there's no need to do it now.

I've only noticed this within the past, say, 2 weeks....

Thanks!

Have you recently added or are you using any USB devices? My laptop freaks out and causes jumps and skips in my recordings when I have the USB wireless mouse attached. Just a thought.

Hey Matty!
Hows St. Louis??

Chucker

Three things...

Norton AV is notorious for eating up clock cycles and slowing systems down. You could try disabling Norton temporarily while you're recording. I would shut down Outlook if you're going to try that option just to make sure that you don't receive an infected e-mail while the AV is down.

Microsoft has been dealing with a Windows Update problem that dramatically slowed systems down while automatic updates were running. You could try shutting down automatic updates to avoid the problem. There is a fix that was released in May-June time frame that supposedly resolves the problem.

One other problem is Microsoft Defender. If you have it set to run automatic scans - the default time is 2AM - and your compute isn't on when it's supposed to scan, it will randomly run the scan. That's another program that will bring your computer to its knees.

I'd also recommend that you empty your Temp file. Go to a command prompt, and cd to c:\documents and settings\<username>\local settings. If you do a dir, you'll find a directory named Temp. You can delete it - it's supposed to be "temporary" - by typing in "rd /s temp". If it removed the directory completely, you'll need to recreate it by typing in "md temp" at the "c:\documents and settings\<username>\local settings" prompt.

A scandisk on your hard drive would also be a good idea. Open "My computer", then right-click on your hard drive and select "Properties". Click on the "Tools" tab and "Check this volume for errors". You won't be able to run checkdisk immediately, but you can tell it to run on your next reboot. Depending on the size of your drive - and if it finds errors - it can take from 15 to 45 minutes to run when you reboot.

I appreciate you taking time to respond...and for all the good info. Much appreciated!

I'd get rid of Norton, Mcafee, etc and get AVG Free. It rocks! My brother is a programmer and he and his geek friends all use it. Never have any issues with it. And again - It's FREE!

Antivirus

I agree re: Norton & McAfee. I prefer Computer Associates antivirus products. You can download and install a free trial here:

http://home3.ca.com/STContent/Subscriptcenter/TrialCenter.aspx?sc_lang=en-US

I know people that use AVG Free anti-virus, which licensed only for home use, and not for businesses. I usually avoid free products for critical needs under the theory "you get what you pay for". There are a number of reviews that are not particularly complimentary toward AVG. It's much better than nothing, but I believe that CA's antivirus is much better than AVG. It's also much better than Norton or McAfee, doesn't slow systems like they do, and has MUCH more frequent updates.

I've seen plenty of infected machines with Norton or McAfee. I've never had a machine with a functional, automatically updating CA Antivirus that's been infected.
