Not that anyone here really cares.
However I decided to play Engineer again.
After a major Power outage that took down WEMG,WTTM,WURD,and WWSI TV in Philly this Morning
I went over to WHWH , and made some audio changes.
I have No Idea if the audio went From Ok to OK or if it went From OK to CRAP.
without a receiver to Listen I cannot tell what I did.
Has anyone Noticed the Audio on WHWH?
I sure would like to Know what you find.

Just curious. Just what ARE you doing playing with the once mighty 1350 frequency? Is it a HOBBY, or are you and (I'm assuming Nassau) attempting to get it back to even close to it's former glory as a reallly great local station for Princeton and vicinity? We as broadcast professionals would like to know. If it's a hobby, let someone or another company who REALLY wants to make it a REAL station again instead of the hodge-podge nature of it now. If you (and whatever entity is santioning this) are SERIOUS about bringing back the grand dame of local radio to Mercer County, then can I play too?

How can an engineer not have the ability to hear a station he's working on?

As much as I find the current 1350 "interesting" it can never be what it once was. Todays management does not have the intellectual capacity to program for the public interest . All they understand is voicetracking, infomercials and sucking every dollar out of their stations. They know how to take, but give listeners something worthwile or interesting? Never! This is not the time for radio to become generic and boring. Not with all the competition for listeners attention. Its time for radio management to get focused and super serve their communities but that costs money and spending money is something the current crop of management loathes.Unless it for a new Lexus or Hummer.

K-Tel,

Many engineers cannot hear the station they're working on. It's simple. Ever have a radio, for AM, a hi-fi wideband radio or tuner, even a car radio, and ram 1 to 50,000 watts down the front end while 20 feet from the antenna? Not to mention huge HVAC fans and ventilator fans at full balst. It's very noisy with industrial volume. In many cases, you need to make s m a l l adjustments and drive away to listen. It's all garbled distortion. Portables/Walkmans with headphones are worse.

At one station, we used a '70's era Fisher receiver and Jensen broadcast monitor. The receiver had the AM antenna REMOVED, and the leads internally clipped out to the tuner gang, and it still overloaded.

WHWH is currently running 1250 watts non-directional. Apparently the tower array was damaged during the time the station was off the air, thus forcing a STA for this reduced power and ND signal.

Multicultural says the plan is to eventually fix everything and get WHWH's normal 5000-watt directional signal up and running again, but honestly, the way things are now, the signal is actually better in most of central NJ. The directional signal was like a blowtorch aimed right between Princeton and Trenton, while the ND signal covers a much larger area, especially at night.

As far as local programming goes... WHWH is now airing local high school football games on the weekends, and I think I've heard some religious programming on Sundays. But during the week, it's all "Radio Ted" non-stop music.

Hello Kevin and gang.
To answer a few questions.
How does an Engineer Hear his own station..
I go late at night and reduce power to only a few watts.
therefore I wont overload the reciever.
or I can just listen to the audio sampled
from the local Modulation Monitor.
I am almost finished with the repairs.
WHWH is Running Local High School Sports live.
I am running required Public Service Programming on weekends.
I even installed a new Transmitter.
Yes the audio is cleaner.
But the one thing that really supprised me most is that
Mr Kevin T. has not noticed that WHWH
is Running C-Quam AM STEREO.
I still have to Fine Tune the Stereo Audio, however it is running C-QUAM

kool somebody let me know when the cquam is fine tuned. me and bill charles would definately take a drive to listen to a well setup cquam station ;-) he has a AM Stereo tuner in his van. despite owning all this cquam gear, i have never got around to setting up a cquam station and neither me or mr charles have heard a cquam station. except for what has been captured in mp3 format and posted to various web and ftp sites.

I didn't notice that WHWH was in stereo because my car radio only has mono AM. I just tuned in at home, and the stereo separation is definitely there! At night I get co-channel interference from from an ESPN sports station on 1350 (likely WOYK from York, PA) but the daytime signal is clear.

There is some midrange distortion in the audio, especially on solo voices and instruments. This could be caused by the audio processor, but it could be something else, like the source audio or STL (if there is one).

Hey Guys
If you did Not know I had a house fire last January.
Im Still waiting for the Insurance Company to settle.
the house looks like it did the day after the Fire.
Some stuff I managed to salvage I stored in my shed
seems like someone helped themselves To my Carver TX-11B and some Other gear.
So to fine tune the C-quam. I am looking to Buy or borrow a C-quam reciever.
I am very bummed that someone would stoop so low as to go through someones burnt home( property)
To Salvage for their own needs. they should Be hung.

It's helpful if you have an issue like this to move to a secured storage location, where there are cameras watching and alarmed doors.

This theft wouldn't be an additional insurance issue?

I think I've seen one pop up on eBay... save your search!

So Neal, what kind of audio processing is WHWH using? It kind of sounds like an Optimod 9100, but it doesn't really have the same "sonic signature" as I've heard from other stations using a 9100 in AM Stereo.
