Can someone please explain to me the differences in these audio compression settings: *MPEG 1, layer 2
*MP3
*Uncompressed Linear .wav (PCM)

Which is the highest quality, lowest, etc. What about .wav files using MPEG 5:5.1 compression?
 
Uncompressed .wav = highest quality, biggest file size; MPEG2 = good quality, smaller file size; MPEG3 = lowest quality, smallest file size. Compression is actually throwing away audio you wouldn't hear anyway before it is recorded. For instance, a loud sound will mask a softer sound under it, so the softer sound is thrown out. How well this is done depends on the compression algorithm; like most things there is a trade-off between the amount of compression and audio quality when it is reconstituted on the receiving end.
