Audio File Servers

What's the network connection speed at the MV? The PC? Wireless? Have you monitored network traffic during these playback issues?

What format audio? Bitrate?

My MVgen1 streams not only audio but DVD video seamlessly. I can't comprehend an audio file larger than that of video.

Files are 44.1K 16 Bit linear PCM WAV.

Playback software is OTSAV DJ (formerly known as OtsJuke).

I'm beginning to suspect this may be a RAM issue, or lack thereof. I ran the same setup on another computer that has 1 GB of RAM and it worked fine. The culprit computer only has 256 MB of RAM. :-[

RAMping Up...

BINGO! XP needs at least 512 to function decently. If you're upgrading, I go to at least a gig of RAM, and more ain't overkill

Here's a news flash: The only difference between Home and Pro's networking is that Home can't join domains and Home doesn't allow RDP (remote desktop). Period.

That's not entirely true. XP Home ONLY supports "Simple File Sharing", which means that you can't control individual access to shares. XP Pro allows you to turn off SFS and control both access and management rights all the way down to the file level. That's a HUGE increase in security, especially if your machine is exposed to the Internet.

For this application, I don't see the need of all the overhead, complexity, and cost of Microsoft Home Server when Network Attached Storage will serve the purpose more easily, and for significantly less money.

AAHHH also iirc XP Pro allows encryption where Home does not on file security....I have a Windows XP machine I just setup as a server....500GB with Raid 5 (another 500GB) and it works just fine in audio editing/recording... NAS is ok BUT doesnt have any antivirus or spyware on them and depend (usually) on a workstation scanning the server...(BTW I have a Buffalo NAS 500GB as well and have dealt with the Snap Servers over the years)...

The server machine is a Dell 2.53G P4 with 1G of memory.....runs just fine.....NEVER run less than 512 for XP......256 went out with Win98 or Win 2000 depending on applications...

Looks like my culprit PC can only have a max of 512. Ahh well, it's an older PC, like 10 years I think. I'm going to see if I can get more than 512 MB of RAM, preferably 1 GB. But if 512 MB really is the limit, it still might work better than 256. ;)

We'll see what happens.

512 may work.....but what machine is it?? NewEgg.com and TigerDirect both have RAM config search engines....choose your PC and it will tell you what ram can go in there and NewEgg is usually the cheapest...I got 1G sticks for Compaqs EVO510s for $30 each....half price! I have one running 512MB....works ok but sometimes it locks up for a sec or two...but it keep playing audio from HD, etc...

It's a Compaq 7996 AMD 999 mHz with 256 MB RAM. When I originally got it, the OS was Win98. A few years ago I decided to devote it as a music playback PC. I completely reformatted the hard drive and put WinXP Home SP2 on it. OtsAV is all I have dedicated it to. It works amazingly well so long as I use an internal Segate 300 GB hard drive to store my audio files. But putting all my music on a separate server must be taxing the RAM.

Here's an update. I decided to test my system with an MP3 file on my server drive. I used 128k Mono. On my culprit PC, it plays the MP3 just fine. No starting / stopping as with the Stereo .WAV files. Are y'all still in agreement my playback PC needs more RAM to play the .WAV files from the server?

Yeh it does. Lots more. And a cacheing drive controller if you can stand the gaff. From your description, it can't get the higher bit rate out of the machine as fast as it needs to using .WAV files.

I'm not an expert, but go for more RAM and find out how much more you can add to the computer (check Compaq's website using the model number of your PC). Uncompressed WAV files sound better than compressed MP3s. Don't sacrifice quality, if possible. Anyways, it might be easier to upgrade your playback computer than to convert or rip the music to audio files of lower quality.

Yep.... 512 MB is the limit. I'll upgrade it to 512 and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I guess it's new computer time. ;)

If it's so old that it won't take more than 512M RAM, I'd say that it's definitely new computer time...

Just a quick heads up for anyone who cares. ;D

The new memory cards are supposed to be in today. Meanwhile I've been playing around some more, and have discovered it's only stereo wav files my problem occurs on. It works fine for mono wav files. So I am fairly confident upgrading from 256 MB RAM to 512 MB RAM will resolve the issue.

Thanks again for the advice!
