audio - KKLS vs Oldies 101.9

It almost seems blasphemous to say this but my ears prefer the sound of KKLS versus the smashed-to-death audio of Oldies 101.9. I've got one of those C-Crane - CCRadio Plus radios which has pretty decent AM receiver. KKLS, given the limits inherent to AM, seems a lot less processed. Either that or I'm just an old fart with soft spot for AM music stations. ;D

One of the best audio chains in Rapid City are the public radio stations. Both 89.3 and 97.1 (Faith) have great sound. Wonderfully life-like.

The audio always sounded smashed for 101.9. First they shoot up to Cowboy Hill then boost it to Terry Peak, with a crappy audio chain to send back. The invested at least 99.95 for all of that.

Oldies 102 sounds flatter than a pancake. I don't recall the station sounding that awful when it first signed on. To my ears it got worse as time went by. It really sounds the worst with that syndicated 70's show in the evening. It almost sounds like the syndicated show stomps on the audio and pumps it up before sending it to the bird and then 101.9 flattens it even more so you're left with the dynamic range of Tiny Tim.

At around 6pm Tuesday evening I was in the car with my GF, who couldn't give a fig about audio processing. So I tried a test. I covered the dial so she couldn't see the frequency and toggled back and forth between KKLS and KFMH and asked which one sounded best. Not which one was playing the best song but which one was easier to hear.

Mr Bojangles / Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was playing on KKLS while Your Song / Elton John was on 101.9. She had me toggle a couple of times and then picked KKLS because she could hear the lyrics more clearly. She said it was much harder to pick out the singer's voice on 101.9.

Just curious, does anyone know if KKLS ever experimented with C-QUAM?
