That was wonderful. I am listening to part two and it is good so far. I listened to part 1 and it was amazing. Do you plan on doing any more like these?

For example, could you do any of the South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Pennsylvania radio stations from 1989?

Again, that was wonderful.

I made this while I was in college...found it in the closet and decided to convert from tape to MP3. By and large, the recordings were made in Dallas or College Station. The CS dial was open at the time -- having 1/3rd the stations it has today so having far off stations like KZFM, KIOC, etc. roll in a few times a month during the spring and summer briefly was not uncommon. KZII, KNIN, and KKQV were picked up back home in Dallas during visits back there at the time (KZII not common...just happened to be a lucky catch one Sunday morning).

Now, it sure would be great if some other regular lurkers around here would post some new or old airchecks from their area. Seems like most aircheck boards have just turned into posting airchecks of retro AT40 shows or weekly oldies shows rather than airchecks of actual stations.

Ah, the days when stations weren't trying to crowd into every little corner of the biggest markets. My family vacationed on the Texas coast a couple of times in the late 80s. I don't think my walkman ever left KRBE and KNRJ.

I have a couple of tapes like this somewhere. They're both east coast skimmers, one from late 1988-late 1989, and one from 1991. There's also a legal ID tape from 1986-87. If there is any interest, I can upload them in chunks.

Thanks Chip. Not being from Texas, I'm glad to hear the history of Texas stations. This is fantastic.

Thanks for this! Around what time was KSAQ doing a modern leaning format? I seem to remember a modern rock/top 40 hybrid on KSAQ at some point.

nice airchecks. I remember those San Antonio stations really well. We were loyal listeners to Magic, KTFM and K-Mix. Nice DXs from back then, from a time where the FM dial wasn't cluttered with crap. Took me back to my grade school days :)

Ok I'm going to answer my own question: Love Train by Holly Johnson...the former lead singer of Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

What a treat this was!!

I lived in Dallas during the mid-80's and Austin from '89-late'92. I also did military stuff in Lawton during '89. I practically grew up with many of these stations, and on my weekends to Houston, I was always flipping back and forth between 93Q, Energy 96.5, and Power 104. This was a good time to be listening to radio in this region.

I've got quite a few cassette tapes I should dig up with airchecks from KZPS (Dallas Z92.5), KTKS (Dallas Kiss 106.1), KEGL (when Kidd Kraddick worked there), B93 (Killeen/Austin), KHFI Austin (when it went through its transition from k98 98.3 to K98.1 to K96.7 to 96.7 KHFI), and KNNC 107.7 when it first debuted.
