Audio of Steve White Show - LISTEN NOW

I know some of you have never heard Steve White. Some of us don't even know how to spell his name. But anyway.... since he was discussed here recently I figured I would dig into my radio archives and pull up a clip of his show. A very interesting clip too since I had no recollection of even having it. It is apparently from Steve's last day on the radio.

The clip begins with him insulting Rhode Island traffic reporter Mike Sheridan. Then Steve tells about a recent experience with the phone company. Finally to wrap up the clip is a phone call that I made to Steve telling him off. I found this the most amusing part since I swear to GOD I have no memory of making this phone call. But here it is. Discovered just this morning. So enjoy this taste of one of the most memorable radio personalities in the history of Rhode Island radio.

I know a few of you think that he was a boon to Providence airwaves back 25-30 years ago but I have to say that after hearing that I am not impressed. I can now say that 1320's worst days aren't right now!

Yeah he was a bit edgy. I would best describe him as the Archie Bunker of radio.

It should be noted that by the time Steve made it to 1320....his best days were in his rear-view mirror, and quite a ways back, at that.

Seems Steve was rather like a gigantic shooting star, which burned extremely brightly......but only for a relatively short time.

It's always sad to see someone turn into a has-been, and spend the rest of their career trying to re-capture some fleeting moment of "blazing glory".

I can't message anyone on this site yet, haven't been here a week. But I'm at brobleybrob at yahoo if you email.

I have other WALE stuff from circa 1991-92 - more Steve White, Bob Giammarco, Geoff Charles, Rudy Cheeks, Closet Free Radio, maybe Wim Janssen. If there's interest, I'll post more.

It really was a huge experimental clusterfuck of radio craziness that year. Would love to hear from others who were there.

You left out the late Joe Caliri......whose midday WALE show was nothing short of an attempt to "out-Rush Limbaugh" Rush himslelf. Only problem was that Caliri was humorless, and talentless as well. His motley collection or rabid right-wing callers adored him.....but it was truly terrible radio.

He passed away not long afterward on the operating table of a local hospital (which shall remain nameless)....while undergoing what was (at the time)....a very new heart procedure called "the balloon angioplasty".....a procedure which nowadays is relatively commonplace.

Steve "White"

It is too bad that there is no audio around from Steve's days on WHJJ. That's when he was at his best. Topical, witty, and very funny. For that brief time, he was the best around.

Thank you Dighton! I remembered him as Joe, but forgot his last name. He was full of bluster, but was nice to me the couple of times I met him. Only a few weeks after I started at WALE, he went in for his operation and never returned.

Was it Wim Janssen that took his spot? And did he die too? Thought I heard he did, but I can't find anything online. I'm probably spelling his name wrong. You know, the militantly anti-dairy holistic health host who took cream in his coffee. He was a decent guy though. Quite a character, as they say.

This might be the wrong thread in which to ask; if it is, feel free to redirect me. I've read most of the Providence Forum here though, and feel I can trust your judgment.

I'm living in a slightly bigger market, rust belt, and after years doing other things I'd like to get back into radio. Just a part-time gig if I could get it, weekend or late night board-op, news, commercial production, whatever. I have kept up with the technology, but I'm not sure what to put on a demo tape these days.

Is a short newscast, weather break, and a couple of commercials still enough to give a potential employer enough of an initial impression? What time limit should I be looking at? I'm thinking 2.5 - 3 minutes total... is that close? Or too much? I'd be aiming more at talk/NPR formats than music, but I would be open to music too. And should I submit it on a CD, a flash drive, or something else?

I know it's probably a pipe dream, but I want to go after it. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I already have time booked for next week at a cheap local studio, enough that I could record for a few different formats...

At some point not long after the death of Joe Caliri.......?Wm?..... ?Wim?.....Dr. Jansen suffered a kind of mild stroke which involved bleeding inside his brain. It left his ability to speak somewhat compromised. However.....it has not stopped him, and he actually still does "Holitstic Hotline" (with employees of his in studio who actually do most of the talking)....and the show airs sometime on the weekend here on 920 WHJJ.

I have many off steves tapes and video as i worked for stevw aka captain i work in radio and on tv with him since from wkri west warick to wale
