Interesting. I can certainly tell the difference, but in some cases I'd prefer the simpler, less robotic-sounding cheap processor. Some the 10,000 plus boxes sounded pretty good though.
It's always market dependant. No real 'loudness war' here, so we have the benefit of sounding pretty damn good. We are an Orban market, so sonically, all the stations here are similar. I have two with Digital boxes/rooms and they do sound brighter on the dial.
Well NYC has always had aggressive processing.CBS FM sounded best when Mike Erickson set it up.Too much grundge on most signals, Lite sounded pretty .My fav analog setup is a Bill Sacks 8100a refurb with an ariane. Now that is one sweet sound...
These days I hear the "Omnia 6 grunge" in small markets too, where the bass tears into the vocals and it ends up sounding like that Lite FM clip towards the end of the video. You'd think that stations wouldn't be so bass-happy anymore, especially now that car stereo systems are better than ever, and if anything, most of them are too boomy and need to have their bass control turned down to sound more natural!
Question is too, on the comparison, did you line up the modulation of both sources. That can reveal a lot about the capabilities of certain processors. Sure, some can sound clean but they also fall off the dial.
The O6 bass grunge is easy to clean up. Slow down the release time on the bass bands, don't overdo the bass boost. Still punchy, not muddy.
Unfortunately, a lot of stations I hear have more of a dull "thud" than punchy bass.

Author of the video says he used the same receiver & recording level for all the clips, and the Amigo was set to 100% modulation (75 kHz deviation). Most of the NYC stations have subcarriers so they are allowed to use higher than 100% modulation.
