audio processor question

We're getting ready to purchase a new audio / stereo processor for our FM. Any suggestions? Of course like everyone we would like something that is affordable but sounds great.

Thanks

If any of you have emailed me in the past and not gotten a response, I apoligize since my computer crashed and I lost my old emails. Let me know if any of you have tried to contact me.

Thanks

Brad Harris

what kind of budget do you have for processing? I've used the omnia one, which retails for around $2500 I believe and the Broadcast Warehouse DSP-XTRA which is around $5000.

I'm about to start doing some testing of Breakaway Broadcast Processor which runs on windows and you would need a 192khz capable sound card and dedicated computer to run it on. The software runs about $300 for the ASIO version, then add the computer of your choice and $150-$500 for a decent sound card.

The Omnia One is a good buy for the price. The Omnia Six sounds great, but then again, it costs as much as a new car.

I checked out the Omnia 6EX FM-HD Audio Processor and it looks nice but we are not HD at this point and it may be a waste to go with that particular processor. Best processor for stations that haven't made the switch to HD?

Does not Omnia still make the 6ex without the HD installed? Several of mine started as 6s and were sent back and modified to HD.

The best processor is the one you have tried and established sounds best to you, in comparison to other processors that you've also tried.

So, instead of asking for very subjective and biased opinions on the forum about processors that all have distinctively different sound and character, get on the phone and arrange a demo of models from Orban, Omnia, BW, Vorsis, etc. that fit your budget. Install, try, listen... That way you will see for yourself if it's Porsche, Ferrari or Aston Martin that suits you best and won't be mislead by the number or how loud the cheerleaders for particular brand are.

In regards to HD, you might not be using it now, but you are buying a processor for _at least_ 4-5 years and in the mean time you might go with some form of digital. You can also use the HD output for web streaming and other uses. If you insist however, practically all manufacturers will offer you an FM only version of their flagship processors.

The Omnia6HD is not meant exclusively for HD radio. 2 main 6Exi features come to mind that folks may find interesting here...

1) for Analog radio - "IM Tune" a feature that allows you to "dial in" a limit to how much IM distortion the FM clipper causes for a given level of loudness.

2) for HD Radio - built in diversity delay...so you don't have to route your analog program audio through the ever changing HD Radio gear. Reboots for software upgrades on "HD" won't mean a loss of audio on the analog side.

These are the major improvements you'll see thanks to the extra bit of DSP power in the 6Exi hardware vs. a stock 6Ex,

I am still using an orban optimod 8100A which is still pretty darn good but the way I look at it is if you or almost no one else with good ears can tell the difference in what they hear without knowing what equiment is being used then whatever difference there is sound wise is of little importance in most cases.

Only when the competition is minimal.
It's my opinion that in any competitive situation where a rating point (or even a tenth of a rating point) could mean the difference between success or failure, higher quality processing can be THE difference.

Now, let's define 'quality'. (sound of can of worms being opened) LOL!
