Audio Question

What we are using:

RCS Player101
Windows XP Service Pack 3
Dell Optiplex
Audio Science cards 4312
Exact Audio Copy
PCM Wave 44.1k

First I rip the audio with EAC, then I try and import it into Player 101. The importing itself is not the issue. It accomplishes this just fine. Except the audio does not sound like the rip that I made with EAC. It sounds different(i.e. less brightness, just sound not as clean) or open sounding. I have found that when I copy with windows, meaning making a copy it does the same thing. I have checked to see if Player 101 was possibly converting the audio to another format. It says it is a PCM wave file. When I take the master copy and rename it (00000001 for example) and paste it to the directory, where Player 101 will recognize it as the bad sounding file that was just imported it sounds perfect. It's not just Player 101 as I mentioned even if I copy the audio file then import that file it sounds bad.I really need to get this solved once and for all.

Thanks

It's probably the AS 5111 card. The Player 101 unit I've had involvement with does a similar thing. The tech support guys for Player101 basicially indicated to me that they belive it's the card that causes some coloring. Personally, I'd rather they find a different card!

Possibly it is getting sample rate converted to a lower sample rate. If you are young you may be able to tell the difference between 15 and 20 kHz.

Or, if it is being converted down to 24 kHz sample rate you are certainly likely to hear the difference compare to a 44.1 rip

So looks at the converted file and check the sample rate.

Good luck.

Make sure that if you are data compressing it into an mp2 that you have the compression set to a very low number. Ideally, don't compress at all. I know on Nextgen there is just a compression setting and a number. If you set it any higher than 2 or so, it really sounds like crap.

I agree with the audio card notion. I have had some strange occurrences with older ASI cards. I would recommend a quick swap of the card.

Thanks for all your thoughts.I do not think it's the card and here is the reason. When I rip the audio to the hard drive it sounds fine.No coloring of the audio. It only happens when I do one of the following:

1) if I were to just make a copy just using windows, and listen to the copy

2) whenever I make a copy of the original

It seems that only when the original rip is copied that is when the coloring occurs. When I listen to the original it's perfect all the time. I did as you suggested I checked the sample rate it is 44.1k. I am not using the MPEG encoder at all.I use only wave for all music files. How do I check the phase Sgeirk? As I stated earlier this only happens when the file is copied from the original rip. The original always sounds great! Sounds the same as the CD, heck most of the time even better! What would cause Windows to do this? Oh yeah before I forget, I chose to use the wave driver for the card not the WDM driver. Is this the right one? I was under the impression that Nexgen and Player101 use the wave driver, unless I was using MPEG, Which I Am Not! Thanks for all your suggestions and guidance I really appreciate it. :)
