Audio: WTMR 800 - Camden/Philadelphia

WTMR apparently has found their niche and it seems to work for them. Just like AM 740 WVCH in Chester has been a Christian station since 1949. Both are commercial stations so unlike their religious non-comm competition (WKDN-FM Family Radio or WXHL-FM- Reach FM Network) WTMR and WVCH can't appeal to their listeners for financial support.

Sign-on and sign-off airchecks from 1981, as well as a sign-on from 1982, the year they got their"clearer and stronger" RCA transmitter! Listen:

Wonder if they had some adjustment problems with that new transmitter--I can remember tuning around one afternoon in the early '80s and discovering that WTMR had drifted a good 10kHz off frequency. It was far enough off that I could pick up WAEB in daylight in Cherry Hill, which normally wasn't possible. Never experienced that with any other area station.

Huh??? ANY station can appeal to its listeners for financial support and can accept donations from listeners. For tax purposes, however, donors cannot deduct from their taxable income donations they make to commercial stations.

Do you know of any commercial radio stations (secular or religious) that have done that? That would be like Lardbucket Motorcar Company running a spot on the radio saying, we didn't sell enough Lardbucket's last year, so we'd sure appreciate it if you donated a few bucks to our corporation. We don't want our CEO to be cheated out of his gigantic bonus this year so send your check to, etc.

I remember the old Rowen and Martin Laugh In segment where Dan Rowen is saying how they are now reaching millions of viewers each week, Dick Martin then says, if each one of you would send in a dollar. Dan interrupts saying, you can't say that, Dick then says, how about 50 cents?

I didn't realize though that a commercial radio station could legally ask for donations. Given how some AM's in the Philly/Wilmington area seem short of local spots, maybe we'll hear such an appeal.

WJIB in Cambridge, Ma. (Boston) I believe is a commercial station doing fundraising to keep on the air. They have a loyal listener following as the last standards & easy listening station in that area. I believe the owner said at one time they'd shut down without this.

WJIB Cambridge MA, WJTO Bath ME, WIZZ Greenfield MA are three. I imagine that there are others. Neither WJIB nor WJTO accepts commercial spots but they do take leased-time programs (church services) on Sunday mornings. WIZZ may do both listener contributions and some regular commercials.

Princeton's WPRB has started to take membership contributions, but on its web site it's still offering to sell spots on the air.
