Audition compression help!

I need to know how to reduce compression on files that are at 15k.

How do I reduce the recorded files to 3k without re-recording?

New to audition and up against the wall.

Maybe I'm just slow, but I don't understand what you're asking at all. If you're asking how to change the bitrate of an mp3 file to make the file size smaller, go to "file" > "save as". Select mp3 from the dropdown and click "options". Unfortunately, if you've already encoded to a lossy format, re-encoding is just going to kill the quality of the file.

If that's not what you were asking, maybe you could provide some more details.

You're not slow I'm just an idiot learning this program without springing for the book. I was told my mp3's needed MORE compression. Then I was given the figure drop to 3k from 15k. I also asked it we were talking about db's or bit rate. No response yet.

I hate not knowing even what questions to ask. Thanks for trying Emmett.

COMPRESSION in audio usually refers to the dynamic range of the recording. If there are places where the recording is very loud and places where it is very soft, COMPRESSION and LIMITING refer to making the loudness or level more even. COMPRESSION usually refers to slower acting changes, while LIMITING usually refers to very fast action to 'limit' individual peaks.

Computer people (not working with audio) think in terms of compressing a hard drive.... well actually.... compressing the size of the files on the hard drive and a person who is more of a computer geek than an audio geek may use the term COMPRESS to describe making files smaller.

It's a little bit like the lesson I learned at the airport one day. I stepped up to the desk and used a term we use with automobiles: I want to take one of your airplanes for a spin this afternoon. The owner looked at me and said: "You may fly one of my airplanes, but we don't allow spins."

(If that one leaves you saying "Huh?"... find a pilot to explain it to you.)
