Audition Feedback

I cannot figure out how to wire the audio input and output of a pc without getting feedback. I have to plug one or the other into the mini plugs on the back of the pc. I am using an old ampro board. This is probably something really simple. I have tried adjusting the windows mixer switches but I figure there must be some setting in the software program. Thanks for any help.

Slow down. Thinking your way through what you write will help you think your way through what plugs you insert where, and what channels you activate in your MIXER window.

The implementation of the WINDOWS MIXER will be different than on another machine with another sound card. The sound card drivers are what determines what is available to control in the mixer.

Some of what you are asking may be an Auditions question, some may be a sound card question.

When I run into a new issue like this, I start by isolating the problems. Start out by doing ONLY input to Audition. Shut off your output amp or speakers for the time being. Play with all the controls available until you know what controls the input so your external amp or preamp is putting sound at about the right gain for Audition to make a good recording. Do PRINTS SCREENS and write down your settings.

Turn off your preamp that is feeding sound INTO your Audition. Concentrate only on getting a wave file to play out to your speakers. Play with all the controls available until you know wht controls output. Do PRINT SCREENS and write down your settings.

Watch for a control screen somewhere that may allow you to enable/disable DUPLEX operation. That one setting sometimes is the factor that allows and prevents your mic from feeding straight on through and coming out the speakers and causing feedback.

All the SCREEN PRINTS and volume settings: put them in a file somewhere for future reference. Someday you will install something new and you will get to play this game all over again.

MY EXAMPLE: I have long been fascinated with what used to be called Dragon Speaking... today it's just Dragon apparently. Talk to your computer and it converts what you speak into text!!!! It was always more pricey than I was willing to pay. They are down to $50 for Standard version and one of the office big-box chains is selling it for $30 this week.

I BOUGHT it. I INSTALLED it. Now my Audition and my Sound Card have gone crazy. I get to do all over again what you are doing.

It sounds like you need to mute the Line In on the Playback mixer under Control Panel. If the signal chain is PC OUT>DESK>PC IN then opening the PC's fader on the mixer will produce a nice bit of feedback. The simplest thing to do is just mute the Line In and let the mixer do the, err, mixing ;)

With this arrangement you can then record into the computer whatever is going on via the desk but also play using another program. So you could be airchecking your show into Audition whilst a cartwall app plays your jingles or you watch Youtube videos on pre-fade

And also remember to turn down the pot on the Ampro board that's connected to the computer output before recording. Follow those two simple tips - problem solved.
