August 11: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on August 11. Discuss or comment as you please……

1253: Saint Clare of Assisi (born Chiara Offreduccio), one of the original followers of Saint Francis of Assisi, dies aged 59. Canonized in 1255, she would be designated 7 centuries later by Pope Pius XII as the patron saint of television. The relationship to television is based on the legend that when she was too ill to attend Mass, she had been miraculously able to see and hear it on the wall of her room.

1933: Televangelist Jerry Falwell is born in Lynchburg, Virginia.

1951: The first baseball games in color (a doubleheader between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Braves) are televised over WCBS-TV.

1954: The use of television in military combat is demonstrated for the first time by RCA-NBC, in cooperation with the Army Signal Corps at Fort Meade, Maryland.

1967: Actor/comedian Joe Rogan (NewsRadio, Fear Factor) is born in Bridgewater, New Jersey.

1985: KNRR, a satellite of Fargo’s KVRR, begins broadcasting on channel 12 from Pembina, North Dakota. It takes over the channel that was vacated a decade earlier by the former KCND-TV, which operated basically as a cross-border Winnepeg, Manitoba station for 15 years until its owners were able to secure a license for a new channel in Winnipeg proper.

1987: Clara Peller, Wendy’s “Where’s the Beef?” lady, dies in Chicago, aged 85.

1991: Nickelodeon moves even more heavily into original animation with the premiere of three new cartoons: Doug, Rugrats, and Ren and Stimpy.

2006: Talk show host Mike Douglas dies in North Palm Beach, Florida, aged 81.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

Even if you're not a Rugrats or cartoon fan, this tribute page created in 2001 for the then-10th anniversary of Rugrats includes a nostalgic look back at the state of TV (particularly cable and the then-still emerging Fox network) on the date of the show's premiere on Aug. 11, 1991 (e.g. medical programs still airing all day Sundays on Lifetime, top TV shows, promo ads, the effects of the 1990 syndication exclusivity rules on superstations such as WTBS, WGN, and WWOR). Very interesting reading!

1925: Talk show host/singer Mike Douglas is born Michael O'Dowd in Chicago.

So Mike Douglas died on his 81st birthday in 2006. Interesting.
