August 17: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on August 17 (not many). Discuss or comment as you please……

1953: KMMT (channel 6), licensed to Austin, Minnesota, begins serving southeastern Minnesota and northern Iowa . Calls changed to KAUS-TV in 1968, then to KAAL in 1975. They have been affiliated with ABC from day one.

1956: Actor James Garner (Maverick, The Rockford Files) marries Lois Clarke, just two weeks after meeting her at an Adlai Stevenson for President rally. Garner, who was still a struggling young actor who had yet to achieve fame and fortune, later said, “I spent $77 on our honeymoon, and it about broke me.” Despite the whirlwind 14-day courtship, and the typical track record of most Hollywood marriages, the two are still a happy couple more than half a century later.

1985: KTIE (later KADY-TV, later KBEH) begins broadcasting in Oxnard, California on channel 63. It is Ventura County’s first TV station since the demise of Ventura’s KDOG-TV (channel 16).

2007: The Disney Channel premiere showing of “High School Musical 2” becomes the most-watched made-for-cable movie ever, with 17.24 million viewers.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

Actually, Channel 16 was originally "KKOG" in its short life.

1998: This was the day that then-President Bill Clinton admitted in taped testimony that he did have a relationship with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky, and admitted in a nationally televised address later that night that the relationship was "not appropriate." Of course, we all know the rest . . .

1960: Actor Sean Penn is born in Santa Monica, CA. His resume does include a 1974 appearance on Little House on the Prairie (as a blond-haired extra).

Sean deserves a small spot in "TV history." In his youth, he guest-starred a few other times on episodic TV before making his break to movies. Recently, he's appeared on an episode or 2 of Two and a Half Men - as himself. He's appeared as himself many times on talk shows, award shows, etc. His father Leo Penn (d. 1998)was a very busy TV director for decades, and directed many episodes of shows like Matlock, Trapper John MD, Magnum PI, etc.
