1942: Actor and former Senator Fred Thompson (Law & Order) is born in Sheffield, Alabama.
1947: Actor Gerald McRaney (Simon and Simon, Major Dad, Jericho) is born in Collins, Mississippi.
1952: Actor/director Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation) is born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.
1963: Actor John Stamos (Full House, ER) is born in Cypress, California.
1969: Actor Matthew Perry (Friends) is born in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
1969: WVNY (channel 22) begins broadcasting in Burlington, Vermont. The new station brings a full-time local ABC signal to the market for the first time.
1985: David Letterman interrupts The Today Show with a megaphone while the show is on the air, by leaning out the window of his building and announcing, "My name is Larry Grossman and I'm not wearing any pants!" (Grossman was the then-president of NBC News.) Bryant Gumbel is not amused.
1986: The legendary Groucho Marx dies in Los Angeles, aged 86.
1987: Actor Hayden Rourke (I Dream of Jeannie) dies in Toluca Lake, California, aged 76.
1987: ABC News Chief Middle East Correspondent Charles Glass escapes his Hezbollah kidnappers in Beirut, Lebanon, after 62 days in captivity.
