August 2: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on August 2. Discuss or comment as you please……

1924: Actor Carroll O’Connor (All in the Family, Archie’s Place, In the Heat of the Night) is born (as John Carroll O’Connor) in The Bronx, New York.

1943: Actor Max Wright (ALF) is born (as George Wright) in Detroit, Michigan.

1953: KMBC-TV (channel 9) begins broadcasting in Kansas City, Missouri, initially in a share-time arrangement with WHB-TV. Under the arrangement, the two stations would each alternate 90 minutes of airtime, broadcasting from separate studios but using the same transmitter. About 10 ½ months later, KMBC-TV would take over channel 9 full-time.

1953: KMO-TV (later KTVW, then KCPQ) begins operations on channel 13 in Tacoma, Washington.

1957: Amazing 1950’s TV-DX: Two separate DXers in Arkansas receive double-hop skip from Venezuela, including a Maracaibo transmitter on channel 9. The approximately 2300-mile logging remains a record for VHF hi-band E-skip.

1957: WPST-TV (later WLBW-TV, then WPLG), channel 10, signs on in Miami, Florida for the first time. Oddly, it is the Miami market’s second ABC affiliate, joining existing WITV (channel 17). Needless to say, such an arrangement did not last long, with the much stronger channel 10 signal quickly forcing its UHF competitor out of business. (The channel is now occupied by non-commercial WLRN-TV.)

1988: WNYW-TV (New York City) drops its slate of morning cartoons in favor of a newscast called Good Day New York, becoming the first Fox-owned station with a weekday morning newscast. It would become the top-rated morning show in the New York market, and inspire other Fox-owned stations to launch morning shows of their own.

1998: Ventriloquist/puppeteer Shari Lewis dies in Los Angeles, aged 65.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

She was actually a regular castmember on "Buffalo Bill", along with Max Wright.

Cassidy also had a memorable recurring role in the HBO series Six Feet Under as the manipulative and selfish psychologist mother of Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) and her bi-polar brother Billy (Jeremy Sisto.

And who could forget her small but effective role in Blade Runner. I believe she played a droid. Nice pic at this link:

Didn't mean to short-change those--but the Gulf War (I) has been cited as a critical moment in the development of CNN.
