Any thoughts?

Why is KBRG listed as "Adult Hits"? It's been a Spanish-language station for years.

Answer: because its format is, in fact, "adult hits".

Of course, it's "Spanish Language Adult Hits". That long term does not fit in a tiny field on a web table.

"Spanish Language" is not a format. It's a tongue, spoken by a couple of hundred million people.

"Spanish" is a nationality. From Spain. In Europe.

KBRG, since the early 2000's, has been the equivalent of "Jack" in Spanish. Three or four decades of music, picked for variety and flavor.

There are, of course, more possible formats in Spanish than there are in English. So just calling them "Spanish language somethingorother" is totally inaccurate.

However, the Los Angeles radio ratings put out by the same source lists the format of one of that market's long-time leaders (KLVE) as simply "Spanish." Six other L.A. stations are also just listed as Spanish. Some additional L.A. Spanish-language stations are listed as Regional Mexican or Spanish Hits. So, they clearly have room to identity the Spanish sub-format. Also, (again, using the identical source of info), the L.A. station identified as having an Adult Hits format (KCBS-FM) plays songs in *English*. That's why I made the comment about the S.F. label for KBRG.

The format descriptions are inserted by the news site or publication, not by Nielsen.

The listings on the radio news sites are full of format errors, and do not match the formats Nielsen accepts and which are part of the Station Information Packet (SIP) that was, in any case, more important in the diary than PPM.

The Nielsen definitions must be picked from a standardized list that requires some work to change or be added to.

The LA Spanish language stations that have "shown" in the last year are listed by Nielsen as:

KLVE Spanish Contemporary
KSCA Mexican Regional
KLYY Spanish Adult Hits
KBUE Mexican Regional
KRCD Spanish Adult Hits
KXOL Spanish Contemporary
KLLI Spanish Hot Adult Contemporary
KWIZ Mexican Regional
KBUE Mexican Regional
KDLD Spanish Contemporary
KTNQ Spanish News/Talk
KFWB Spanish Oldies
KWKW Spanish Sports
KMRO-FM Spanish Religious
KLTX Spanish Religious
KSSE Spanish Contemporary
KRQB Mexican Regional
XEWW Spanish News Talk
KCEL Mexican Regional

And, if you compare what Nielsen lists with the general market formats, you will find that some of the websites that publish ratings are very far off. And, again, that is because they don't use the Nielsen data.

Write to Radio Online. Most of their English format descriptions don't match Nielsen, either. Some are just totally wrong.

Looks like all those prior month extra KBAY listeners were in fact KNBR listeners who were marking time until the Giants started playing again.
