August 22: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on August 22. Discuss or comment as you please……

1867: Mechanical TV pioneer Charles Francis Jenkins is born in Dayton, Ohio.

1928: Alfred E. Smith accepts the Democratic presidential nomination, with WGY/W2XB (Schenectady, New York) simulcasting the event on radio and television. This is believed to have been the first remote television news broadcast.

1932: The BBC launches its first regular television service, using John Logie Baird's 30-line electromechanical system on 831 kHz.

1940: Actress Valerie Harper (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda, Valerie) is born in Suffern, New York.

1945: Journalist Steve Kroft (60 Minutes) is born in Kokomo, Indiana.

1947: Actress Cindy Williams (Laverne & Shirley) is born in Van Nuys, California.

1954: WJNO-TV (later WPTV) begins broadcasting on channel 5 in West Palm Beach, Florida.

1958: The second version of The Life of Riley (with William Bendix in the title role) ends its network run on NBC.

1964: WONE-TV launches in Kettering, Ohio on channel 22. The station would struggle as an independent for a short time before affiliating with ABC. (The network had initially balked at such an affiliation, citing the still poor percentage of UHF-capable sets as well as the decent existing ABC coverage in the market from stations in Cincinnati and Columbus.) Calls would later change to WKEF.

1969: The CBC’s most northerly affiliate debuts as CHAK-TV (channel 6) signs on in Inuvik, NWT.

1977: Actor Sebastian Cabot (Family Affair) dies, aged 59.

1981: WVEU (channel 69) signs on in Atlanta, Georgia, with a hybrid schedule of daytime business/financial news, and subscription pay-TV nights and weekends. Now WUPA, it is the current CW affiliate in the market.

1988: Later premieres on NBC.

2007: The reality series Anchorwoman debuts on Fox with 2 back-to-back episodes. The premise, with a model attempting to become a TV news anchor, falls flatter than flat with just a 2.0 overnight rating, and Fox cancels the show the very next day. (Would that ALL reality shows would die such a quick death!)

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

...the first TV version, with Jackie Gleason, was a terrible failure. NBC eventually decided to try it again with the actor, Bendix, who'd led the hit radio version of the '40s; that time it worked...

1977: Actor Sebastian Cabot (Family Affair) dies, aged 59.

...Cabot also got a certain level of immortality for himself by lending his voice to Bagheera the Panther in the Disney theatrical movie of The Jungle Book as well as narrating Disney's earliest Winnie the Pooh movies...

1988: Later premieres on NBC.

...NBC had finally figured out how they screwed up Tom Snyder's Tomorrow, so they decided to bring it back under a different name; Snyder had started his ABC Radio show the previous year, so NBC tapped someone just as capable to hos, Bob Costas. The first guest was someone else NBC foolishly let slip out of their hands, Linda Ellerbee...

And they never, EVER showed Richard Lewis' second appearance.

Can't believe it's already been 2 years since that mess. From the looks of things, KYTX/19 has moved on, seemingly in the other direction, now using 2 primary anchors who were anchors, at different times, with older ABC station KLTV/7.

1973: Current "Saturday Night Live" cast member (since 2005) Kristen Wiig is born in Cananandigua, NY.

Sorry to "nitpick"...and I know it's a tough one if you're not local (as I once was)....but it's Canandaigua- origins are Seneca Indian...
