August '22 trends

Usual disclamers: 1. 12+ only. 2. All data is from AllAccess.com and **************** . 3. ONLY the top 5 stations in each market are noted. Extra notes to come(by myself or others). (And this should be the July '22 trends, not the August ones. My mistake.)

First...

BUFFALO

1. WBLK/93.7 9.2(up 1.3)
2. WYRK/106.5 8.6(down .6)
3. WGRF/96.9 8.0(up .2)
4. WBEN/930 6.4(down .3)
5. WHTT/104.1 6.3(up .3)

Then....

ROCHESTER

1. WBEE/92.5 7.8(up .8)
2. WDKX/103.9 7.0(up .7)
WHAM/1180 7.0(down .8)
4. WCMF/96.5 5.4(up .5)
5. WPXY/97.9 4.9(up .7)

Townsquare should be hoping that the back-to-mainstream WMSX bills enough to make up for the less-than-stellar performance of WBUF. Unless, WBLK and WYRK bill extremely highly that Townsquare can take a loss from WMSX and/or WBUF.

WECK is trending down in the last 3 books while WHTT is going up. WGR is slipping significantly. Guess they're hoping that football season will fix it. The "other" Sports Talk KB has another 0.1. Does that mean about 4 total listeners? The Wolf is flat and likely has reached its ceiling. WBUF is still below a 2 share, so no surprise they sent their Brand Manager down the road. Meanwhile, Audacy has launched another round of RIFs nationwide...

I swear, Audac(it)y would do cartwheels if they could find ways to make the majority of their stations jockless. Hell, they're halfway there already.

They would keep local talent for their larger market stations. Star 102.5 used to have more on air staff
But even Power 96 in Miami has out-of-market presenters. Although it's true that national programming has a track record of performing well, Julia and Bru have yet to strike a chord among South Floridians. Granted, South Florida is Latino-heavy, but Julia and Bru aren't saving the Hampton Roads' Z104, either.

CHR is the only format where out of market presenters would work entirely. I wonder what is the reason why 94.9 the point does so much better than sister station z104. When they both overlap in playlists. B96 and WTDY is also way behind the competing iheart station as well in chicago and philly

WECK’s share in August is the same as six months earlier. It went up. Now it’s back down. Not sure you can draw any conclusions. It could be WECK is a radio station that will range from a three to four share. If it falls under a 3, then maybe there’s an issue.

WGR’s numbers will begin growing in August. July is an absolute dead month sports-wise. Bills players and coaches are enjoying time off before training camp. There’s little in the way of Sabres news. Yes, Bills training camp began during the last week of July. But that week wasn’t enough to affect the numbers. Mark my words. WGR will be above a five share this fall and should top a six share come Bills playoff time. This happens every year. Management knows this. I’m sure they’re not worried.

I wouldn’t write off the Wolf. Country music finally lifted WLKK above a two share. I think we need more time to see where it’s going. I was talking with a respected local radio vet today who is bullish about the Wolf’s future. Again, we shall see!

I do agree with you that WBUF is going nowhere.

Personally, I’m intrigued by WBEN’s numbers. The station fell out of its customary spot as a top three station in the market. It could be the summer doldrums. People are vacationing and are disengaging from the news and stress-inducing political talk. I expect the numbers will rebound in the fall, especially as the mid-term elections draw near. Still, it’s something to keep an eye on.

Remember, in the continuos measurement diary markets, each "book" contains two months from the previous book and one "new" month. So one "off month" can affect three "monthlies". This is why agencies don't buy off a single book or even just two or three.

It's true that Alternative Buffalo never reached a 2 share. However, the bar has been lowered dramatically if The Wolf is considered a success. They will never get close to WYRK or even WECK type numbers. Other people said Alternative Buffalo was great at generating NTR. Obviously, that turned out to be false...

Yes. I simply noted that the numbers have declined in 3 consecutive reports...

I am actually surprised they didn't do better. This summer was not exactly a down time for hot-button talk issues. The Jan 6th hearings, the economy and price of gas, other assorted lightening rod topics should've kept things more interesting than summers typically are.

Janet has been doing her show from Boston for the past few years. I believe that is still the case.
Didn't she age out of the stations demos like 20 years ago?
Do the people that still listen to this station know or care that she isn't "Live & Local"? My guess is that most people are indifferent to the location of air staff...

Which could be caused by a wobble in just the oldest month.
