August 23: This Date in TV History (DIY Edition)

I could not locate an August 23 TDITVH from Stanislav from last year, so it looks like a DIY edition is in order. I'll start off with a few dates--feel free to add your own events or comment further:

1912: Actor Gene Kelly (d. 1996) born Eugene Curran Kelly in Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to his renowned film career, his TV appearances have included "Going My Way" (1962-63), "Jack and the Beanstalk" (1967), "Muppet Show" (1980), "North and South" (1985), and a 2006 posthumous appearance on "Family Guy."

1922: Former child actress Jean Darling is born in Santa Monica, CA. In addition to her "Our Gang" appearances, she briefly hosted an NBC-TV show in New York, "A Date with Jean Darling" (I couldn't find any more info on this program).

1928: Actress Marian Seldes is born in New York City. Among her roles was an appearance in 1992 as Aunt Brooke on CBS' "Murphy Brown."

1934: Actress Barbara Eden ("I Dream of Jeannie," "Harper Valley PTA," "Dallas" from 1990-91) is born Barbara Jean Morehead in Tucson, AZ.

1960: Actor Chris Potter ("Kung Fu: The Legend Continues," "Silk Stalkings") is born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

1970: Actor Jay Mohr ("Saturday Night Live," "Last Comic Standing," "Gary Unmarried") is born Jon Ferguson Mohr in Verona, NJ.

1982: Actress Erin Foster ("The OC," "American Dreams") is born in Los Angeles.

2001: Actress Kathleen Freeman (born Feb. 17, 1919 in Chicago) dies in New York City. Her TV roles included "Topper," "The Donna Reed Show," "Hogan's Heroes," and "I Dream of Jeannie"; guest appearances on shows including "Gomer Pyle USMC," "The Lucy Show," "Beverly Hillbillies," and "Home Improvement"; and voice-over work on "DuckTales," Disney's "Hercules," and also as the voice of Peg Bundy's mom on "Married With Children."

2007: Actor Robert Symonds (b. Dec. 1, 1926 in Bristow, OK), whose TV roles included "Dynasty" and the short lived 1970s CBS soap "Where the Heart Is," and guest appearances on shows including "The Rockford Files," "Benson," and "M*A*S*H," dies in Los Angeles.

I believe she also had a recurring role on the Bob Cummings Show AKA "Love That Bob".

I believe she also had a recurring role on the Bob Cummings Show AKA "Love That Bob".

Her best-known roles were Gertrude Linkmeyer on Hogan's Heroes, and Sister Mary Stigmata in The Blues Brothers. She had roles in 268 different movies & TV shows between 1948 and her death in 2001 (per IMDB - uncredited prior to 1952) as well as a lot of stage performances. She was never hurtin' for work.

Both born on Aug. 23, 1949:

1949: Actress Shelley Long ("Cheers") is born in Fort Wayne, IN.

1949: Singer/actor Rick Springfield ("General Hospital) is born (as Richard Lewis Springthorpe) in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
