I looked back a few pages and since it wasn't mentioned....it was on August 23rd 1989 that WLS played the last song and made the full transition to talk.

The story and the aircheck:

So what time is the "Silver Dollar Survey Show" on? :)
...right after the Republican Party infomercial ends ;-) ...

All you have to do is turn on AA and you'll have all the democratic infomercials you want :)

Alas, it's not. A pity too, because WLS is still operating in CQUAM AM Stereo after sunset (for all three of us who still have AM-stereo radios).

Bring back Larry Lujack and have him host it.

Make that four (I think it will outlast my '91Jeep)!

Can you still put 2 radios together and tune slightly off frequency and get it? :)

I'm not so sure about outlasting your Jeep. My 98 XJ as of pulling into the driveway tonight has 299,800 miles on the odometer. By this weekend, it will be in the 300,000 mile club.

You cant beat that old AMC 6, got a 99 WJ with a young 189k 4 litre myself.
Gone be closing the old main plant up soon, whole world has changed since that six was designed.

No. The system WLS uses a different format but back then, they used the Kahn system. Stereo was achieved by putting the left channel in one side band and the right channel in another. By off-tuning a radio you could isolate the sideband so two radios produced stereo, though there was a high end splatter.

WLS left instruction on how to achieve stereo with two radios by having listeners call 867-5309, the song was a hit around that time.

I did try the 2 radios back in the early 80s. You could hear the separation but you had to deal with the static.

Too bad WLS didn't switch to talk a few years earlier. The station still sounded good in 1985 when they celebrated the 25th anniversary of the rock and roll format. But by 1989, it was sad to hear what WLS had become.

They hung on to the music a little longer than they should have in hindsight.

"25 Years of Rock n' Roll... W - L - S Chicago". A great TOH used in '85. I always tuned in at night here in FL and loved hearing that. Wish I could find that package.

I remember calling them to complain. They acted like I was crazy or something. Really "nice", people. 890 is now a dead frequency to me at night - nothing there worth listening to.

Can you still hear WLS in Texas at night with all the interference from the south?
