1991: Roc premieres on Fox. Initially a run-of-the-mill sitcom, it would gain much attention in its second season when the show was done live. (The first sitcom to regularly broadcast live since the 1950’s). The experiment was done at the behest of the principal cast, all established stage actors. The live shows would begin with a “prologue” in which one of the cast would mention a current events item from the past week, or even that very day, to "prove" that viewers were indeed watching a live performance. (At least in the Eastern and Central time zones, they were…)
1992: The 1800’ transmitting tower of WCIX-TV (channel 6) in Homestead, Florida, collapses under the winds of Hurricane Andrew. The station quickly resumes broadcasting to some areas via its translators, and for a few days WCIX newscasts and CBS programming move temporarily to WDZL (channel 39) until WCIX is able to activate an emergency transmitter on a borrowed tower.
(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..)
