August 27: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on August 27. Discuss or comment as you please……

1916: Actress, singer, and denture wearer Martha Raye (The Bugaloos) is born (as Margy Reed) in Butte, Montana.

2004: Longtime local L.A. TV news anchor/reporter Larry McCormick dies, aged 71. He was one of the first African-American news anchors in the country, beginning in 1969 on KCOP-TV. Not long afterwards, he moved to KTLA, where he spent the remainder of his career.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

Before moving to TV, he was part of KFWB's airstaff near the end of that station's top 40 run. From what I hear, he was also behind quite a bit of vital charity work in LA.

"Colonel Maggie" was quite possibly one of the most incredible women who ever lived. This link can explain it much better than I ever could:

Corky Marlowe is quite right. I only casually knew Larry McCormick, but he really was a good guy both on and off the air. He was always giving something back to the community.

Somewhere, I have an old KFWB Color Radio survey that has a picture of a young Larry McCormick in the studio with a couple of other DJs. I always meant to show it to him, but knowing him like I did, it probably (in a nice way) wouldn't have been a big deal to him.

Interesting thing about Tuesday Weld..from what I remember reading some years back she doesn't "claim" to had done Dobie Gillis. Another one was Warren Beatty. Back in the 80s I can remember watching Dwayne Hickman on Entertainment Tonight telling a story about the time when he was at a party only to bump into Warren Beatty..he mentioned about Warren's time on Dobie Gillis only to get the remark by Beatty "..I have NEVER done televsion !!". And Beatty was serious !!!

Kinda odd for someone to make such a claim such as that they had never done TV when there is proof out there that says otherwise.

I assume Tuesday Weld was being sarcastic because she was in a whole lot of Dobie shows. Warren Beatty probably just doesn't want to acknowledge it. Ryan O'Neill was also in it.

Plus on the TV show "The Odd Couple" she was the object of Oscar Madison's affection. His fantasy was, they would be the last two survivors after a nuclear war.
Oscar, Oscar, Oscar.

I don't remember her on Ozzie & Harriet.
You could've done much worse in those days than be stranded with Tuesday Weld :)
