August 29: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on August 29. Discuss or comment as you please……

1949: WOW-TV (channel 6, now WOWT) signs on the air in Omaha as Nebraska’s first TV station.

1953: WNET-TV begins broadcasting on channel 16 as Rhode Island’s 2nd TV station. Bearing no relation to the later WNET (channel 13, Newark-New York), the station struggles as an ABC affiliate before going dark in 1956. The license would remain active for 25 years, during which the allocation moved to channel 64 (due to the reassignment of channels 14-20 to land mobile use in the area). In 1981, the long-dead station would be resurrected as independent WSTG.

1953: KHSL-TV (channel 12) signs on the air in Chico, California.

1966: Hullabaloo airs its final NBC network broadcast.

1967: Part Two of “The Judgment,” the series finale of The Fugitive, is broadcast by ABC. The finale brings in 30 million viewers (72 percent of all viewers at that time), the highest-rated series television program ever until the November 21, 1980 "Who Shot J.R." episode of Dallas. (Which was later eclipsed by the final episode of M*A*S*H.) The massive audience was achieved in spite of the fact that a few affiliates reportedly (and unbelievably!) pre-empted the episode due to local baseball broadcasts! (It would be shown on tape-delay the following week on those stations.)

1981: Eight is Enough ends its network run on ABC.

1988: KACV-TV (channel 2) begins operations in Amarillo, Texas, finally bringing a local PBS signal to the market.

1993: Living Single premieres on Fox.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

2005....TV stations in New Orleans and Biloxi get hammered by Katrina.

And in a few days, they may well be hammered again by Gustav. Not the sort of "rerun" they want to see.....

WOW's early programming included a comedy show called "The Squirrel's Nest", hosted by a promising young kid named Johnny Carson.

Was strange to see KERA/13 from DFW (350 miles away) in Amarillo's TV Guide and on their cable before that. Many up there were very happy to see KACV debut....

1993: Living Single premieres on Fox.

And still, only the first season is available on DVD :( :( .....
