August KROQ and Amp numbers

In 12+ Amp is off 3.4 to 2.5 from July to August. In 25-54 it is off 3.6 to 3.0.

In 25-54 KROQ is up a tenth to 2.4, and in 12+ it is up two tenths to a 1.9.

KROQ's variations are within the margin of error. Amp is not.

I think this only represents two weeks with the new morning show.

KROQ's cume dropped under a million for the first time since April.

But the TSL increased. The cume loss is a common phenomenon when a format is modified but not totally changed. The increase in TSL is significant in that it indicates that the early adopters like it. What remains to be seen is whether new cumers can be attracted and whether the newbies like it enough to go P1 or P2 with it.

Looking at 18-49 and 25-54 would indicate that there is a likelihood of an increase in new cume. But concluding anything at this point is sort of like reading tea leaves (a service which can be had with complete online social distancing today!).

Exactly. It's a process. Any station that makes a change should expect to invest at least a year building an audience. Entercom has two stations in that process right now.

KAMP is just in its first month with a new morning show, and so these numbers only reflect a couple weeks. They should drop for a couple more months.

My bad: I listed the KYSR numbers as AMP.

in 12+ AMP went 1.8 to 1.6 and in 18-49 did 2.1 to 2.0

KYSR went 3.4 to 2.4 and 4.2 to 3.2 in 12+

How did KIIS do in 18-34 because in 6+ they're not even in the top ten?

They are 3rd in 18-34 women. Of course, their target is really 18-49 women or 15-44 women, not 18-34

KIIS every so often has one of this kind of off month in its target demos. Normally they are in the mid to low 5's in 18-34 women, but occasionally get a low to mid 4 number and then snap back to the 5's.

Some attribute the erratic behaviour to the variants in new CHR music, and others to the sample itself. But this has been going on with KIIS since the PPM rolled out over a decade ago.

Got any statistics on how much time people are spending in their cars during this period compared to before Covid? I believe L.A. normally leads the country in time spent in traffic where radio is important.

So what caused that KYSR slide? Looks like the competition with KROQ is suddenly getting close again...

The interesting thing about deep ratings analysis is that it shows that with most listeners use of a similar station is not as common as use of several different stations. The conclusion is that stations are selected due to mood by most adults.

Only in very young demos do listeners flip between stations when a song they don't like plays; I recall I got over that when I was about 16; at that point in my radio life I would tune out whatever song had just started so I could hear the break or segue on another station.

So the question would be whether KYSR modified rotations in July... as often occurs when there is too little good new music or when too much bad new music is played.
