August numbers are here

August numbers: Houston/Galveston

Big drops for KKHH and KGLK.

KSBJ back on top.

What is KHCB doing to get that big increase?

KQBU hits a 0.4 for the first time in ages, double the last numbers KFNC had before dumping the book.

Vida Unida also on the rise.

I haven’t been paying too close attention to the playlist, but they’ve been playing a lot of songs that’s been added to Fortnite Festival. People maybe tired of the repetition?

KLTN getting back on track, KLOL #1 is Spanish and KLTN #2. Good job..
It was just a small sample, but I did notice several weeks ago that they were playing more Norteño-esque music during one of my sporadic scans.

More accordion, less tuba. Maybe this explains the shift? Granted, this was over a weekend. But it was definitely something to take note of as KLTN finally regains the lead from the rimshots.

I did notice one Thursday night they where calling the time slot Retro Thursdays and the DJ kept saying: Remembering the days of super Thursdays from Estereo Latino now LA QUE BUENA. And they where playing lots of grupera music.

I think KHCB has a sizable audience. They are very dependable, forever-established, and have a massive signal.

However, they aren't doing new stuff to juice the numbers. There isn't some giant marketing gimmick going on or some new morning show that is drawing buzz. That's not what KHCB is or what they do. There are few month over month or quarter over quarter or even year over year changes to programming. Small tweaks and adjustments, occasionally. The music library doesn't seem to change much either.

Any large jumps or drops in the monthlies should be primarily attributed to sampling.

MORE COWBELL!
The problem isn’t the Tuba, the problem aren’t Bandas. The problem is these “popular bands” these trending Bands like Grupo Frontera. They have nothing on Duelo, Intocable, Pesado, La Firma ect ect. They’re just trending at the moment and all these famous artists trying to record with them. Like Bad Bunny, Shakira, and others. But that doesn’t mean they’re super great musicians. They’re just trending but after a while it gets boring. And the younger generations (like many have said before) don’t listen to the radio. They stream, so these new trending artist do not cater to is older listeners.

The summer books are always erratic, very odd indeed to see both of the "classic" stations take big dives like that, but it's probably moreso due to that than any repetition which I honestly haven't noticed.

If anything, banda has lost popularity over the last few years, as artists like Banda MS, La Adictiva, Los Recoditos etc who had several music videos reach well over 100m views on YouTube in the 2010s have declined during the 2020s and aren't getting that same traction anymore. That's probably why there's not as much banda on KLTN these days, though I do think they did a good job of balancing it with norteño when banda was more popular.

I have noticed that KLTN does seem to be embracing more corridos tumbados than they were even just 3-4 years ago, though. The music is extremely popular with the under 30 streaming crowd, but I'm not sure it's received as well by the 30+/35+ crowd, particularly those from Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. I don't really think corridos tumbados mix well with norteño songs from Nuevo Leon artists like Los Cardenales, Los Invasores etc, but that's just my opinion.
