AUGUST PPMS

No real surprises, Kiss still #2.

WLTJ has almost the same cume as Y108 and less than half Y108s share.... that means people are tuning out quickly. (It probably means that they are a lot of people's 2nd-3rd-4th choice and people push the button whenever their favorite station is in a commercial break..).

Are they ever going to figure out that they need to blow this up and do something completely different?

Urban's actually starting to look like a good idea.

In the age of the PPM I would also argue that it could mean that WLTJ might be getting more play in public places (stores, offices, etc.) since the PPM simply measures exposures and not necessarily any sort of serious listening. Diaries, as troublesome as they could be, required the listener to actually take note of what they listened to, which usually meant those stations they actually paid attention to and were not just exposed to, the PPM isn't nearly as discerning.

Urban is the only answer for that train wreck...the Q92 thing has been as exciting as cardboard and from what I understand, a failure....WSHH sure hopes they stick with the "Q" crap.......Maybe they could go country.....? Maybe Mark Cuban could buy the Pirates and WLTJ?

Here are the three things I'm taking-

1. There are eight- COUNT 'EM EIGHT!- stations getting ratings of 6.5 or more, with WDVE leading the way at 8.8.

To me that implies there are a lot of stations who are doing pretty well.

It also means to me there are legitimately eight stations that could realistically make a play for No. 1.

2. The mighty WDVE is just fourth in CUME, behind WWSW, WKST, and WRRK. WWSW is No. 1 in terms of CUME. That's rather interesting to me.

3. In the great sports talk battle, The Fan and ESPN 1250 are both still hitting themselves over the head for that cult male listener, but The Fan has 47% greater CUME.

Which really shouldn't be that much of a surprise because they're an FM and they're all local, but from the journalistic point of view it makes me wonder that if ESPN 1250 listeners are tuning in longer and paying attention longer, then they may be the more influential station.

Actually from a sales standpoint LTJ's best option probably involves some version of CHR (B93, anyone?).

They could lean it Urban, or they could lean it pop, or they could lean it adult.

At the present time I'd bet if they did some really hard analysis of their PPM results, which you can literally do minute-by-minute,
they will find that their awful were-only-talking-to-women imaging is the tune out.

The Fan just isn't gaining traction, otherwise with that cume they'd be leaving 1250 in their rear-view mirror at this point. Just a bunch of local meatballs breaking down games and analyzing the Tuesday Tomlin press conference syllable-by-syllable. They try really hard to come up with segmants that are solely devised to get guys to call in and go "YEAH!!!"

Now because I travel constantly, I prefer national shows anyway because that way I can listen to the samer thing every day via satellite, but I've heard far better locally in other markets. Steve Duemig on 620 in Tampa was a show I couldn't miss when I lived down there. Surprisingly, Jacksonville has always been a good local-talk market.

Listen sometime to Mike Trivissano on WTAM in Cleveland. Granted he's not on a sports station so he goes very general or even off of sports sometimes, but he's an icon in that market. I always thought someone like that was what would have revitalized KD-AM in the afternoons.

The Fan made a mistake when they didn't put Giannotti in PM drive. He's by far their best talent, and he's wasted in morning drive, trying to work around Alexander.

Boss-I don't know what the ratings are, but the Fan's morning show has improved 100% with Giannotti. They have a couple of good regular bits (which one is true?), the Ryan Clark segments have been good so far and the pacing is much better. But I agree about Alexander--he is annoying as ever and is holding the show back.

My point is Giannotti would be more valuable to them in PM drive. It's hard to change morning habits, and they're fighting an uphill battle against WDVE and The X, which have a lot of sports content. I( suspect some of their target demo is also with Stern in the morning. They have one talent (Giannotti) who stands above the rest and they need to maximize him.

The morning show will never be worth much as long as Alexander thinks he's an entertainer.

this is probably a dumb question from someone with minimal knowledge about the technology of PPM....but if these
stations have such a hard time hitting their automated breaks, broadcasting dead air, running two programs over top
of one another, etc., what level of confidence do they have that the PPM code bursts are going out properly?

FreddyE1977, that's one great question, and one I'd like to see answered for I too have limited PPM knowledge and it's encoding perimeters as one walks in and out of encoded radio signal's all day long.... As opposed to the old diary system, and with the advent of these new PPM devices do these little critters really work from a measurement standpoint or for the sake of sounding silly, is it all Arbitron hype?

There is a PPM monitor with a green light on the front. If that light turns red the PPM data is not going out over the air.

At this point, Rhythmic Top 40 would be the best option for WLTJ.

Agreed. WiLD 92.9 anyone? I'm not a big fan of 96.1 Kiss.
