6) Da Peak
7) KMLE
8 KZZP & KSLX tied

Congrats to Mr. Abrams are in order, as should be apparent when 25-54 is posted... both for the stellar KOOL 25-54 and the nice recovery on KMLE

The owners of KFNX should be beaten in public.

But, whenever I am out of the country, I listen to KTAR (because the b@stards at Cheap Channel won't let anyone stream!)

Mr. Abrams is barely average. He took over KOOL which was already a given winner due to no direct format competition. A monkey could program that station, and Abrams only proves it. As for KMLE, it is still very, very mediocre and still struggling. He must be cheap or CBS would have booted him by now. Same goes for Tim and Willy. Ssssshhhhhhh. Let’s be quiet or we’ll wake them.

One thing the rest of us have learned about the PPM is that every station has a dozen or more very serious competitors, many of which we did not imagine were so.

There are exactly 100 shares. If a station goes up, it took something from other stations.

Eduardo,

So you are saying that every station in the market is as big of a competitor to KMLE as KNIX or to KTAR as KFYI? That’s insane. The first line of radio competition is a direct format competitor, and KOOL has enjoyed the luxury of not having a direct competitor for years. No direct competition is a big reason for their standing, not their programming or air talent, which in all reality is not anything above average.

It's got to be hard for some of you **cough cough "insidethenumbers"** to give a little credit
where it's due. KOOL and KMLE are strong in the money demo. They're doing great.
Arm chair quarterbacking is a wonderful sport. The only problem with it is it's not in
relevant, and those who play it are out of the loop when it comes to today's radio..PPM
and the economic climate.

As to Mr. Abrahms..he's employed..are some of you?

yup.

Meanwhile back at the Hut, Nurse Czarina Jeff and I are awaiting the demo rankers to see how young KT'R is and old KFWhyEye is. Or maybe not. One thing's fersure, both had rather anemic cumes...but it was August and who the hell listens to radio when it's soooo hot?

No, it's not. At least in PPM it's not. What we seem to be seeing is that most listeners over 25 make a choice within a format, either KFYI or KTAR and either KMLE or KNIX and that becomes the default choice for each of those formats. Then they make a default choice for other moods/needs and so on. If you compare the sharing of KMLE and KNIX among each other, vs. the percent of the cume of each that listens to all other stations, I'm sure you will find that the double country sharing is far less.

Same with news/talk.

and KOOL has enjoyed the luxury of not having a direct competitor for years.

I don't often find a person who only likes one format unless they are around 18 years old. Adults tend to have multiple mood/occasion/situation choices, and they are most often found to be formats with rather limited playlist overlap.

Country and AC tend to be the biggest cume sharers with gold/oldies/classic hits. There are quite a few geographic and ethnic considerations nationally, but KOOL certainly has strong direct competitors in Phoenix.

No direct competition is a big reason for their standing, not their programming or air talent, which in all reality is not anything above average.

There you go again. Every station in the market competes with KOOL. The direct competitors in 25-54 are stations like Mix, The Peak, KDKB, KESZ, KZZP, KMLE and KNIX.

And with KMLE, the sharers tend to be stations like Mix, KUPD, The Peak, KOOL, KSLX and, of course, KNIX.

Back in the diary (I have no PPM access) KTAR-FM's sharing was as much or more with KUPD, KZZP, KESZ, KOOL, KDKB, KMLE and even KTAR AM as it was with KFYI in the sales demos.

I'm pretty sure you were just listing some examples of KOOL's competitors, however
KSLX should be on the list, and prominently.

KOOL is classic hits, K-Slacks is classic rock (or "heavy oldies" in some respects).

K-Slacks was the closest thing to turn to formatically last November and December,
when we were subjected to the "KOOL Kristmas." <angry>

KOOL still plays Wilson Pickett somewhat regularly, K-Slacks does on occasion.
(But I still don't think he is classic rock.)

K-Slacks has been doing "block party weekends"--a classic rock staple--for years,
now we've been having block party weekends on KOOL recently.

PD Kris, if you want some weekend theme ideas, how about checking out CBS sister
station KRTH? Then there's those @#$% cold segues! <roll eyes>

PD Kris does deserve a congrats however for #2 25-54 in the latest PPM.

Eduardo is still missing the point. Although all stations naturally have an effect on each other, only the station’s without direct format competition have a distinct advantage……like KOOL. If another oldies station came into the market, good or bad, KOOL would drop significantly. Therefore, no “congrats” are in order for a station or a program director that really hasn’t accomplished anything other than holding status quo. On the other hand, Abrams other station is KMLE which is struggling significantly after several years of success. For that, along with Tim and Willy, the fault is easier to identify.

No, I was listing from the diary sample the biggest sharers with KOOL.

KRTH has just fallen out of the top 10 in 25 54 due to the return to pre-65 oldies, no doubt.

There are no markets that have two oldies/classic hits stations. Most markets have one, some markets have none. There is never a direct competitor in this format yet some stations like KOOL do well 25-54 while others aren't even in the top 10.

Most markets have better radio competition in general. Phoenix radio is dead right now with repetitious music stations, most on auto pilot. This benefits KOOL with no direct competition. In Phoenix radio now, the best of the worst is actually the winner. How sad is that for a major market? As for morning shows, Phoenix has become incredibly boring with no real personality. Beth and Bill are the only big names left and they have become self indulgent, tired and boring. Who else is there? KTAR is simply a news wheel in the morning, KFYI has some no name broomstick guy, the rock stations are absolutely dead with either music intensive shows or personalities still trying to be Stern. Phoenix has no big name rock personality, and that alone is sad. Peak, Mix, Movin’ and KOOL are basically jukebox morning shows. Country has two shows stuck in the Morning Zoo 80’s with stale impersonations, cookie cutter bits or parody songs And only a very small fraction listens to sports radio. So what is there? Phoenix is the very best example of radio killing itself with budget cuts and forcing low level talent into drive time slots simply because they have accepted low salaries.

I have to agree with Radio Pro's comments. I've been in (and still am) in radio many years, and radio consultants (such as insidethenumbers claims to be) have always been a joke to those of us on air. They always take credit for when things go right and never the blame when ratings go south. It's always someone else's fault, and then they go to the next station to convince management how great they are, and draw a huge salary until the jig is up once more. Apparently they become bellegerent after 37 years and call people names if they get any disagreement. Let them pontificate since they have all the answers to everything, and don't bother to respond or you may be called a____(fill in the blank)
Incidentally, I may be wrong because my mother was not a virgin, but it seems to me that KOOL's ratings started increasing after John Clay took over the helm a while back? Is it just my imagination running away with me?

Sandusky's FM's have a live person in the studios every single day, 24 hours a day. Sometimes there's voicetracking but a person is in the studios, more than can be said for the rest of the market..

So why no staffing in the KAZG closet at sign-on and sign-off, to keep track
of the lamptimer drift and to play a legal ID?
