August Ratings

KKLZ is the new #1 6+ station. It looks like they had a spectacular month. I wonder if JACK flipping to talk in the middle of this rating period had anything to do with this boost? A business I know of that used to play KKJJ now has KKLZ on. This might explain why KXPT went up as well, or even KSNE. KKJJ played a variety of music so it would make sense that a variety of stations would gain their displaced audience.

It looks like KVEG is in a freefall right now. At the same time KRGT is gaining and the stations are now tied. So it appears that LA KALLE is hurting HOT more than any other station. KRGT does play some English language music from artists like Ke$ha and Katy Perry so I could see them stealing some audience from the CHRs. Or do you think there are other reasons not related to KRGT to explain why KVEG is trending down?

It looks like KVGS had their best month ever. They beat KXTE who I noticed musically sounds more like KVGS than ever with more mainstream alternative, more 90s and early 00s gold, and less active rock. KXTE is still a little harder of the two. KVGS plays two of my favorite alt currents/recurrents that KXTE does not play...Temper Trap-Sweet Disposition and Mumfred and Sons-Little Lion Man. Maybe they are too artsy sounding for 107.5.

I am sure they are still doing well in key demos, but KMXB is slowly trending down. I wonder if KVGS is having any impact on them? I say that because at one time MIX had some alternative cred. I even knew of people who said "I listen to the alternative station...MIX 94.1". Of course these days they are straight ahead Hot AC, so maybe some of their listeners who like alternative are drifting to 107.9 (who plays many of the songs MIX played back when they were a Modern AC).

If 107.9 is stealing or sharing audience from both 107.5 and 94.1 this is in reverse what took place in 1996 when alternative powerhouse KEDG was attacked (and destroyed) on both ends by KXTE and KMXB. Still this isn't as dramatic because MIX remains relatively strong and while they are making gains, KVGS does not nearly have the ratings the old EDGE had at their peak when they were the #1 ALT station in the nation.

Even if NOW FM was down in August (was July their ceiling?,) just having them as part of the radio landscape could help explain why MIX isn't quite the powerhouse they used to be. The last time LV had a CHR/Pop, the old 101.9 KISS FM, KMXB also came down to earth. You could also say that PARTY is somewhat of a rhythmic version of MIX. So there is a lot of competition and fragmentation for the female audience that MIX targets and I would guess still does pretty well with.

It was expected that KRGT-FM was going to gain from the Assimilated Hispanic listener in Las Vegas, and Women 18-34. If you look back to when we discussed this (when they launched), I mentioned that KRGT-FM would not hurt KWID, but if I were at KLUC or KVEG, I would be worried.

Spanish market is going through some changes right now in the market, and Regional Mexican formats did good in August. Spanish Adult Hits continues to do well.

As I predicted, the Spanish language landscape would change. KWID lost it's #1 25-54 position in August and September Week 1 saw it all the way down to 5th. KRGT even bit KISF 25-54 for the first time. KRGT is pulling from a lot of stations.

Where is KRGT getting its audience, from the Hispanics who listen to KLUC and Hot 97.5?

KRGT is getting a little piece from everyone at this time. A little Spanish speaking Hispanic, a little English speaking Hispanic... but you can tell it was getting a nice chunk from CHR stations.

At this time, there is a lot of sampling, so we will see how the dust settles.

I don't believe we have seen the JACK-FM impact yet. Remember, they were only KXNT-FM for 3 days of this book. I think we'll see the real impact in this coming month. I expect Point, Mix and maybe even KXTE to see the most benefit. Didn't they run some promos for KXTE and KMXB before the flip? Trying to keep it in the family.
