August Ratings

Wow - The Fish fell from 1st to 7th!? An 8.5 to a 4.7? What in the world happened? WSB reclaimed the lead and WALR is surging.

Rodney? Any idea what happened to Fish?

I fear that there is a malignant conjunction of diabolic forces.

WAKL 106.7 and J93.3 sure didn't pick up what Fish left on the bottom....I would have thought that with school back in session that Fish would have gotten some more bites, not fewer.

Usually Fish does poorly over summer break and picks back up in the fall with soccer moms playing bus driver. Doesn't look like B98.5 or Star picked up what Fish lost.

The only thing I can think that happened to the Fish was a change in several meter wearers. IIRC many years ago that the same thing happened to the old Dave FM.

105.3 lost around 25% (6+) and WLKQ lost (20%). According to Arbitron the market is around 10% Hispanic. I personally feel it the Hispanic market share is greater, but I understand there are reasons why it is under reported. Both Hispanic stations only have 1.4% (6+) combined. So does this mean around 80%+ of the local Hispanics do not listen to Atlanta’s Hispanic radio stations?

WSB's 6+ might reflect "a change in several meter wearers."

2017: 9.475

2018: 8.25

2019: 6.49 (Jan-Jul) 7.6 (Aug)

But that is the average of meters detecting the station at any given moment, not the total number of meters that detected in a daypart or all day.

11.2 is the Hispanic percentage in the market. Every year Nielsen updates populations, based on ACS and Claritas data.

Generally, Spanish language shares are at or below 50% of the market Hispanic population percentage in growth markets where there are lots of first generation immigrants. It can be as low as 10% to 12% of the Hispanic population number in highly assimilated markets where few Hispanics speak Spanish, such as San Antonio.

The issue in Atlanta is that the stations are not very good, and they have deficient signals. And you have lots of more educated, bilingual, Hispanics... particularly the middle-class migration of Puerto Ricans to the market... where even in the first generation listening has never been to the kind of Spanish language music played on Atlanta radio.

My daughter is a good example: she lives in Atlanta and would never listen to either of the FMs in Spanish, even if she could hear them

Well above my skill set. Not sure a change in the total number of meters was what I said.

But if the "average detecting the station at a given moment" suggests WSB is a huge tire with a slow leak, then yeah.

Fake News, Fake Ratings

And WJZA AM1310 is STILL off the air and has been for a while. Hmm.

Next year is the presidential election, and that plus the new FM signal auger well for WSB.

I've never been able to understand why WFSH ratings fluctuate so much.

Is this the first ratings where Kiss 104 and Majik have both topped former powerhouse V-103?

No, Kiss was ahead when the PPM was first introduced. But I believe that was before Majic started in the format. (107.5 was still Smooth Jazz.)

107.5 was smooth jazz and PPMs drove them out of the format.
