Augusta flip

Eagle 102 and 105.7 The Bull have exchanged frequencies, but it won't be complete until Saturday, August 25. For right now, classic rock Eagle is simulcasting on both 102.3 and 105.7 - while country Bull won't take possession of its new home at 102.3 until the 25th. The call letters for the stations in Augusta, GA apparently remain the same: WEKL for Eagle and WIBL for the Bull.

CC has moved it's money-maker, The Eagle, to a 100,000 watt stick and put its country outlet on class A 102.3. Probably a good move longterm on their part. Since 102.3 was tranferred to the Aloha Trust a while back I'm guessing CC is shopping for a buyer and considers the country format expendable in Augusta.

Wow, and Eagle has always done really well on the 102.3 Frequency. I was P/T at BBQ and ZNY in '98 when John Boy and Billy was the #1 morning show, beating out all of the local shows. Cumulus owned them then. I forgot who was PDing, but it's always had a good following, and was programmed well.

Interesting bit of coming full-circle: Mike Thomas was on Y-105 when I was there. I was just in AUG a couple weeks back and heard him on Eagle. Now he'll be back on 105.7! Nice.

Was in Augusta over the weekend and listened to Eagle 105.7 the entire time. Their processing on the 105 signal sounds flat. It sounded clearer on 102. I'm sure it's just a matter of "tweaking", but still. I think they'll do well. It's hard to top Kicks in Country. That fight is what Lite 98 was trying to do with BBQ. Not gonna happen. Not now anyways. In the future, however....... Hey, WGUS was the Country station until it was brought down from its pedestal.

Actually, when Lite was launched its AC competition was Sunny 105. Where are they now? BBQ was still Top 40 at the time.

As a matter of fact, it might've broke George's (and for that matter all of Augusta's) heart, but Birnie Florie saved the AC when he flipped the two stations. BBQ is back on top and the only CHR in town after a long absence is WHHD, which used to be Lite.

Now that you mention it, wasn't Lite more of a "snoozack" station back when Sunny 105 was around? I remember flipping there a time or two and heard much worse than light AC.

Well, according to the new spring book BBQ is no longer on top. In fact, far from it. I'm sure they'll do well in the fall again when they switch to Christmas music for a month.

btw, the Bull actually beat Kicks overall. Of course as we all now know, CC took Bull off the air and put classic rock The Eagle on 105.7 a week before the numbers came back.

Yes, Lite was pretty sleepy sounding especially in the beginning. But they eventually hipped it up a little and stole a lot of Sunny 105's audience, hence the flip of the formats.

I stand corrected.

Just looked at the Spring #s from the Arby link at allaccess. Yeah, it's been a while since I looked at 'em (I admit, I'm a slacker). It makes me wonder what the numbers would be if BBQ never flipped, and mobile news was still there.

As relevant as WBBQ was when it was a CHR, I'd guess they'd have strong 18-34s and damn good 25-54s, too, for a CHR.

WBBQ/Top 40 jocks, I'm sure, lament hearing those call letters on a light-rock format; at least their CHR still exists in some form or fashion.

I got to watch from afar while WZNY/Y105 slowly died on the vine from a lack of attention after all we'd done (Michael Chase, Mackenzie Clarke, Rob Collins, Bruce Stevens, etc.) to make a CHR relevant in that market again after the switch.

You got that right. BBQ was the reason I love radio. My sister and I had a ton of the Q-Cards, and my wife's mother actually won a road prize for having a BBQ bumper sticker on her van. Those were truly the days.

You guys did great on Y. It's a highlight of my life to have the privilege of just working P/T there. I always had a blast messing with Curry while I was working Q on Sat overnights. :D

I love saying that I had the privelege of being on BBQ, but I really wish I was playing CHR.
