Aunt Carlos Leaves The Building

Akbar,

His name is Ankarlo.

Show some respect, especially to a guy who has gone through what he has gone through.

Thank you.

OK....So, the afternoon show discussed his leaving, and everything around it......they started to try & describe brain injuries, how they heal, etc.,.....am I the only one who found that ironic? I mean - the KTAR afternoon hosts......trying to come off brain surgeons?..........................(Too Soon?...yea?....OK, sorry!)

There was some pretty good fireworks back in the day in Dallas. Ankarlo was on KLIF and the morning crew on sister station 1310 The Ticket apparently said something to him during a break. Don't think he appreciated them (Gordon Keith) coming across the hall. Think I heard something about an escalation at the company Christmas party. Maybe urban legend but it did get to the point to where the Ticket talent couldn't not bring his name up on the air.

That Ticket feud is legend. Mornings was something like 33rd place when Ankarlo started. He went top 10. Helped that the Ticket morning show talked about him all the time. Sorry to see him leave KTAR under such unfortunate circumstances. Hope he gets well!

OK, let's seeeeeeee... Akbar's 1700+ posts compared to your 3 posts. Hmm, I wonder if you stumbled into some kind of inside joke? Don't jump in a conversation and start making comments about something you don't know anything about.

I strongly agree with AZAndrewG. How does 1700+ posts, or even 100,000 posts, justify calling someone by an improper name? He should be rightly addressed by his given name of Ankarlow. Mr. Ankarlow, if you will. And while we're at it doctor, it's KTAR -- not KT'R -- just because one of their talent over five years ago slurred the call. Tain't funny no more.

I had regularly posted here but sat out following some unwarrented remarks. So I read your comments now but seldom participate. The "Aunt Carlos" reference just grabbed me the wrong way.

Now let's see what rhetoric will follow this post.

Who really cares?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Mr. Ankarlo (or however you spell it) is not one tiny bit concerned with someone making a funny take on his name on some internet message board. He's probably got much more important fish to fry, like recovering from what is clearly a life-changing injury.

I've never detected any genuine animosity directed at "Aunt Carlos" from the good Dr. Akbar, and I'm guessing that the target of the "improper name" is probably not all that worked up about it.

But hey...maybe he is worked up about it. Maybe Bob Dreste is here to express Ankarlo's anger.

Is that the case, Bob?

If it is, then I'll be more than happy to say that Akbar should refrain from calling him "Aunt Carlos."

If it isn't, then I'll chalk it up to someone getting angry on the internet for no apparent reason.

I'm really going to miss Darrell Ankarlo on KTAR. I didn't start listening to his show until his second return after the car accident, and thus I discovered why he's so popular.

Bonneville and KTAR were a class act in handling this situation. Others, please take notice.

Best wishes to Ankarlo!

When Ankarlo did his silly stunt at the border, and breathlessly announced how concerned he was for his safety by being in Mexico (Uh, Darryl, most of your listeners have been going to Rocky Point for decades, its not scary), someone on this board called him Aunt Carlos, its funny. Its all the funnier because he dramatized his hyperbolic border visit in a book that no one bought.

Calling him Aunt Carlos is a jibe towards his hyperbole.

I suppose calling Pat McMahon, "McBland" is not OK? I have lots of respect for Pat and what he has done in his career, however, his show on KTAR was incredibly dull. Same with Preston Westmoreland, who has been called "przzzztn" because the show moved as fast as a glacier. Barry Young gets called "the nearly bald one", a play on words.

Its a message board, free speech and all that rot. I don't think anyone (myself included) has any real issues with the broadcasters, they are public people. I don't think that "Aunt Carlos" rises to slander, before, or after his accident.

Or maybe we should all make this board as bland as possible to please you?

Well, unlike some individuals who suddenly decide to say nice things about someone whom they have raked over the coals simply because of retirement/death/etc, I'll tell it as it is/was:

I didn't care for Ankarlo the talk show host--not necessarily because of his politics, but more for the delivery and pomposity. The show didn't bring anything particularly new or innovative to the dial and I thought his show became more of a 3.5 hour marketing tool for his book. All of that having been said, I do sincerely feel for him as a person and don't believe anyone deserves to suffer through what he has endured, despite my incredibly (justified) negative thoughts about Bonneville, they did stick it out as long as they could and had to eventually reach a conclusion to the situation... that's just business.

It is somewhat surprising that they cannot find someone to replace him, but given what they are likely looking for, I would imagine it would be tough to fill that void.

Unfortunately what I saw in this post was 1) people going back on what they had said about someone simply because they were having an unfortunate turn in their life and 2) other people deciding to be trolls by attempting to insight a flame war on a radio message board... (Bob).

I met Anklarlo in Denver where we were both covering the Democratic National Convention. We shot the breeze for a while and I asked him about his reporting from the border, which I thought was cool (I am not in AZ and only heard them via podcast). He thanked me and said the next time he saw me he'd give me his new (at the time) book. I didn't see him the next day at the DNC, then I was off to the RNC in Minnesota. Ankarlo took off to cover the hurricane and I was sure that was that. I almost forgot about it. But, after the hurricane, he went to the RNC... actually tracked me down to give me a copy... thanking me for taking the time to listen his work.

This might not be a big deal to anyone else, but I thought it was cool. I have met many a-holes in this business and he is not one. I wish him the very best in his recovery.

Jason

so how long before they announce who is going to take the mid morning shift?
