As we count down our 10 Best Markets for Radio Listeners, Austin comes in at No. 8. Your thoughts welcome.

First, that picture is of Houston not Austin.

Second, have you ever been to Austin and actually listened to the radio?

Third, KNLE is definitely not a Christian AC outlet.

Forth, I like this quote at the bottom of your article:

There's also no major commercial FM talk yet.

Yet is right. Within the next 36 months KLBJ is going to move to FM and/or Clear Channel will be flipping one of their stations (probably Jammin) to FM News/Talk. With the recent announcement in Indianapolis I am surprised this has not come up yet on the board. Austin and Indianapolis are almost identical in that all of the AM signals are terrible, the ESPN affiliates are worse, and Emmis owns the heritage News/Talk station.

It is only a matter of time.

Compared to other cities, Austin radio is pretty good! Been through San Antonio lately? :)

Also, that is embarrassing that the skyline they used is of Houston... with such a blatant error, how could someone accurately judge the quality of radio in a particular market. Especially since I started a thread here earlier about how Hot 93 is doing an entire promotion about naming their HD-2 channel, however the author talked about Magic giving away HD radios and how earth-shattering that was.

Can't sample a market by listening to streams and looking at 12+ arbitron numbers.

Please...I don't think whoever wrote that article was even in town. Did they even listen to any of the stations? Austin radio is so bad compared to San Antonio. The formats are ok, but like the article mentions, there is no oldies or smooth jazz formats. I don't bother listening local anymore.

Honestly, give me SA radio any day.

Austin Radio is Great. The Best Morning Show around. The Bobby Bones Show kicks ass. But other Morning Show go down hill. But Music is ok around here. Who Listen to the Oldies???

Thanks for the comments, folks--even the critical ones. The idea was to stir debate. And I felt pretty sure going in to this that every market choice would set off stir some disagreement from the people who actually have to live with only these stations day-to-day.

But yes, I did listen. Yes, I have been to Austin, and would gladly live there (even without the radio factored in). And, yes, it is hard to try and hear every market through a local's ears, but people who live in a market are often the least charitable about it. (Many people reading this would probably have nicer things to say about NYC radio than I often do.) You have certainly seen my best outsider's case for why it's better than so many others.

Beaun: I actually did know about the Hot HD-2 promotion and should have included it. But even giveaways are more than I've heard most people do nationwide.

I'm sorry "YeahIWasInRadio", but the only thing San Antonio radio has going for it is possibly the best AOR in the country... KISS. That's it! Albeit I don't speak spanish so I can't comment on those to be fair, but c'mon... It's all synicated, voice tracked, or 'mandated-in' by Cox. San Antonio used to have some really good radio, but not in at least 5 years. And yes, I would trade 99.5 KISS for KLBJ or 101X anyday.

And back to the guy that wrote about Austin, not even a mention of KUT? It's one of the biggest 25-54 stations in the market.

i used to listen to austin radio back in the 70's 80's and little bit of the nineties, stations like z 102 when it was classic rock, koke when it was country, very little to oldies 103. nowadays some of bob 103, llano oldies and one other station.

No that is a picture of Austin looking at downtown from the congress street bridge on the hike and bike trail of town lake. Get your cities straight.

Please don't be so simple. If you would have spent 10 seconds to read any of the thread before hastily trying to show me up, you would have seen others agreeing that the photo was of Houston as well as the author admitting that he corrected the mistake.

I am going to go ahead and forgive your harshness in advance.
