Austin Jammin 103.1 translator sliding toward Classic Hits?

Hall and Oates is a Rhythmic Oldies staple. "I can't go for that" was heard on now defunct KTJM 98.5 Houston's Jammin Hits, Jammin Oldies, and Jamz incarnation. Jammin Hits also played Spinning Wheels by "Blood Sweat and Tears" from 1969.

Jammin is more of the modern oldies music playing mid 70s to mid 90s. Kind of like Kool Gold vs. Magic 105.3 in San Antonio back in 1990. Both stations 98.9 and 103.1 are currently Oldies they just jumble different decades of music or I would more accurately say different timelines of music. 1975-1995 I think plays on Jammin and 1961-1988 on 98.9 for back as 1959 if you count Crusin America.

Heard them playing non-Jammin Hall & Oates.
Are they positioning to fill in the gap when the KXBT sale is complete?

While it may be possible for Austin to regain an 'oldies' outlet when the current one is gone, Jammin doesn't appear to be a suitable replacement. Some of the music is sped up and I have a feeling that the song you heard was sped up so it had a bit more energy.

Nashville had a station very similar to this in 2000 that played Hall & Oates and Olivia Newton-John was well. It didn't last long before another switch then eventually to sports talk.

The previous format on 103.1 was Sports Talk.

They seem to speed up a lot of their songs. When they first started off all the way to the end of June they played songs at a near normal speed, and had a wider playlist.

But you got to remember Jammin Oldies started to fade in the year 2000. Stations started to re-brand themselves as Classic Hits, and Jammin Hits. In 2001 Houston and San Antonio dropped their Jammin Oldies formats, while the Austin, Texas station on KFMK kept it intact until 2006, and got on the Movin Bandwagon but kept their Jammin moniker and call letters.

Donna Summer "On The Radio" 1979
Ize Kamozie "Here Comes the Hotstepper" 1994
Mc Hammer "You Can't Touch This" 1990

Played at the top of the hour.
Confirms the station at IIRC 103.1 is a Classic Hits of the more recent decades vs. KXBT which is playing "Turn" by the Byrds at the moment before that "Lady" by the Little River Band.

Never heard the Little River Band on 103.1 though not even "Lonesome Loser".

Nothing new, many top 40 related stations, (including both KPEZ and KHFI in Austin, and KXXM and most of KTFM in San Antonio,) do this to seem like they've got more energy.

Sounds better at normal speed IMO, but yeah, whatever. Haha.

The music got newer, but the name never changed?  Not too surprising, I suppose.  Once it morphed from the KFMK I knew when I moved here in 2005, I stopped listening.

Jammin' is a bit more upbeat a great deal in what it plays now.  They still have not recovered completely what was played during its time on KFMK in 2005.  At least not yet.

Some of what I'm hearing now would never find its way to a classic hits station.  The same could be said for a lot of classic hits-rockers making its way to Rhythmic.  ;D

Classic hits on a translator?  I don't know.  If it happens, I would hope it wouldn't stay there long.  It's probably a hard sell as it is, but on a translator?  :-\  Get it on a signal that covers the metro well and it will be okay.  KXBT seems to be doing good enough even at its current facilities.  While on the small class A in Bastrop County, it was hard to hear in southeastern Wilco.  I can't imagine what it sounded like in Austin, especially in city center.  Right now, both 102.7 and 103.1 are completely out because of KLTN.  KJOJ also wipes these little translators out.  KZPS in Dallas wiped out 92.5 almost daily until 10am.  You would have to be close to the transmitter to hear them without issues. On the translators, you would have to huddle up to the antenna like you would huddle up to a fire on a cold night.

I wouldn't consider the translator having much bearing as a sports talker as the format wasn't exclusive to the FM signal and especially on a small signal, but I could be wrong.

Nope I was suggesting Classic Hits/Oldies for 98.1 dumping current KVET-FM, and keep Jammin where it is now. Classic Hits/Oldies wouldn't make it past 2.0 on a translator or a Class A and 92.5 is proof of that.

They're not running much in the way of ads on Jammin'. One break an hour, it seems like. A short one, too. Of course, their expenses are squat. It's what I've got on in the car most of the time, now. Wish they streamed.

WYHY "Y107" (now WRVW) during the 1980s sped up their songs to insane speeds. Ah, those were the days. :) It was a top rated station for years, if I remember correctly.

Personally, it depends on what the intent is. My limit is 1% on most everything, but soft AC did not get the chipmunk treatment. ;D

If they think that Classic Hits a la "Big" or something similar would make more money than KVET-FM is now, they could, I suppose.  KVET-FM has better facilities.

I'm not sure what strategy they had for the KVET change.  That would be the factor in whether or not that happens.  That and it being successful.  Time will tell. I've not heard it since I've been back in Texas (I was in Vermont for a while). Being from Nashville, you'd think I like country, but I really prefer rock and old AC.

Not a bad idea.

Another possible oldies candidate is 1370/96.3. With 5kw on AM and an FM translator, they should be able to get some listeners.

Good point, Fred. Entercom was allegedly ready to grab 98.9 if the UT deal fell thru, so they must have some notion of rolling out a new format here.

i tried to listen to 95.5 majic oldies hd 2 channel, it need's to be reprogrammed, maybe they can get the program director of 98.9 and maybe bo chase.

The only time I was able to pick up 96.3 FM was on my portable HD radio. However, I can pick up 97.1 really good.

Listeners are not really interested in music on AM in any significant numbers regardless of how good the AM coverage is (see KVI). Also, 103.1 is a vastly superior signal to 96.3, everywhere except the area west of Capital of Texas Highway, which is a lot less densely populated. I can certainly see Clear Channel moving 103.1 towards a more true oldies format. I am curious though why it has still not been added to iHeart. The Clear Channel translator running the Kiss format in New Orleans was added immediately. It's been what, 4 months now?

Anecdotally, I'd say 97.1 is the best of the Austin translators (99.7 is a close second). Great height, decent power and no near-by co-channels to fight with. 96.3 is an order-of-magnitude worse in my experience in all areas of the market.

And I have to constantly fight with 102.7 to pick up 103.1 on my Walkman unless I am over by Burnet and Koenig those parts of Central Austin. Pick it up on the drag? Forgetaboutit!
