Austin Translator Notes

This morning, news broke that three AM licenses in the Fort Myers-Naples market were turned in. All three of these stations were also heard on FM translators and the initial four year condition of the move-in for two of the translators during the AM Revitalization process had been full-filled, thus allowing the AM to be disposed of and the translators to continue on by being fed with an HD sub-channel.

This got me thinking about the Austin market and if there are some moves and changes coming for some of the many translators here.

- 101.9 FM in Round Rock, which is currently part of The Horn network by way of KTAE 1260 AM in Taylor, seems most likely. It is directional with a huge null to the south because of co-channel KJZX-LP. KJZX has since relocated to 89.1 FM so the directional signal can now be reconfigured. This translator was part of the FCC's AM Revitalization initiative and had a four year condition on its license. That condition being it had to rebroadcast KTAE for at least four years. Those four years were full-filled back in December. So expect it to be moved further south, perhaps all the way to the tower farm with a new primary station (possibly one of KTXX's sub-channels). Its can't go all the way to the farm while rebroadcasting KTAE because of signal and milage rules. Why neither of these things have happened yet is very puzzling.

- 103.9 FM in Austin rebroadcasts KFIT 1060. This was also a Revitalization move-in and it full-filled the term back in September of last year. Worth noting is the licensee of the translator is a different party from the licensee of KFIT.

- 94.1 (K231CZ) was allegedly moved-in to rebroadcast KTXZ 1560. It was supposedly broadcasting with 10 watts off of Blue Springs near Slaughter in Southeast Austin. I say allegedly because this station was never built nor put on the air. Recently the licensee has filed a silent notice saying it took it off the air "PENDING A SALE OF THE LICENSE". That sale will ostensibly happen this November after the four years are complete.

- The only other translator in the Austin area with a four year condition is 101.1, which rebroadcast KTXW 1120. That condition expires in October of next year.

- 97.1 Austin City Limits Radio has apparently completed its upgrade increasing antenna height. In my listening this has always been the best translator in the market, in terms of coverage, and this should improve the signal a little more.

- Lastly, no news yet on 96.1 in Hutto, which rebroadcasts KTSN, completing their upgrade to 96.3 from the tower farm. Perhaps that will take place once they close on the purchase of KGID 96.3 in Giddings, which was announced back in March. This is going to be a very good translator right there with 97.1. Not only is 96.3 a relatively clean frequency, but they will also control same-channel full powered stations both to the east and west to protect the translator in the future. Very smart.

That 94.1 is the same owner that used to have the 96.3 translator in Austin a couple years ago, which never really sounded good when it was on. I remember hearing 96.3 with audio only on the left speaker and a humming noise once, but when it was deleted they were on around that time with silence.

Keep in mind, also, that how you acquired the translator determines when and whether or not you can turn in the AM license. If you simply bought a translator and never made more than minor changes, you can turn in the AM license at any time. If you got your translator through one of the FCC's 250 mile waiver windows, you must keep the AM and the translator paired for a minimum of four years. If you simply applied for a translator on an open frequency in the final FCC translator auction, you must keep the AM and translator paired indefinitely. The FCC or Congress could change that at some point, but it’s not presently allowed in that last case.

Edit: I see you mentioned the four year window.

KTSN already has the 100.1 translator...and the 96.3 translator move-in will have the same coverage area...are these really going to broadcast the same thing? Or is a second format on the way on one of the frequencies?

Have to wonder about the future of KTSN 1490...would seem to be a prime candidate for being sold or its license being turned in, if Sun Radio has a HD subchannel somewhere to serve as an originating station.

If I remember correctly, Sun Radio used to be on a HD sub channel of 107.1 before they bought 1490. 1490 probably saves a lot of HD rent and allows them to control their own destiny as opposed to being subject to another owner’s whims. KTSN might be a good candidate for going digital only, but I’m not sure why they would sell it. And if they sell the AM, 96.1/96.3 has to go with it.

Guess I will have to agree with you there. Anyone within decent range of KTSN also has good reception of 100.1 and the future 96.3. Little point in leaving the 1490 analog going, when the AM is little more than an originating station...FM is where all the listeners are.

The future 96.3 is currently on 96.1 K241DA. I heard a top of hour ID on Sun Radio's stream announcing the translator's call letters.

Last time I was in Austin 96.1 was playing Sun Radio but would go off the air every minute or so and then come back for a bit. Once the change to 96.3 happens I wonder what will happen to 100.1

Sounds like transmitter problems for 96.1. Once I heard a station in my current area shutting completely off for 5 seconds every minute.

A sale has been filed with the FCC for K231CZ from Wendolynn Tellez to 94.1 Partnership for $67,000.

I do not believe this translator was in fact ever constructed or put on the air. I made a point to tune in on numerous trips through the area during the last few years and have never heard it even once. I also made multiple stops at the supposed transmitter site and never could locate any antenna equipment.

I'm not gonna pay to read the article they should just put ads on their site.
Here is the FCC application for the sale though.
As for it's future plans I have no idea if it will rebroadcast 1560 or not.

Not sure if KGID is still being sold. Their sale was filed with the FCC at the end of March... Don't those expire if nothing happens in a certain amount of time after?

As for 104.9 KTXX HD2 what is it playing? Maybe it will be the originator for 101.9 if/when that moves to Austin.

I think if a pending sale is approved during the license renewal period then the closing has to be delayed until after the renewal is granted. KGID's renewal application was only granted on July 22nd.
