austin unfilled formats

formats holes in austin radio to be filled:
classic rock new wave
oldies easy listening
jazz rythm and blues oldies
classic country blues

for me a real good classic rock station, oldies (no mix of old and new music, just the classic's)
and if anybody else has a format preference can post thier own favorite music format that austin and other formats we don't have. suggestion and comments always welcome. thanks captex.

Cap, I like some of those suggestions, but offhand I'd say the Easy Listening format is covered quite well by KNCT 91.3 from Killeen. And they've also got the Sunset Valley translator on 97.1 with a pretty good signal, even if it's just 50 watts.

Blues? Shoot, I'd go for that. I've suggested before that something like "Bluesville" (channel 74 on Sirius) without much of the really old cuts might work in select markets. Austin would come closer to being a candidate than many other larger places but it would still be a tough sell anywhere. Now, a "bluesy" classic R&B just might have legs.

KUT plays some good Jazz music sometimes, I agree we do need a oldies station back. KVET does a good job with Classic country.

I've been saying for years that this town needs a sweedish polka station.

How can you say you're fufilling the needs of a community with this rock and roll... and hippin and hoppin...

I want more liner cards!

Where are my liner cards?

Give me my liner cards!

remember when we had real jocks? that read real liner cards? and answered phones?

*sigh* Those were the days.

I remember when radio meant something. When you could call a radio station, make a request, and get ignored by a real person.

where's my satin jacket? I've got to make an appearance.

LOL-Sweedish Polka? Ok, I think we need to sober up now, Too Funny! ;D

I think Austin could use an Urban AC/Classic Soul format, but the closet thing as far as Urban would be KAZI-88.7, but a commercial station would do well either on AM or FM, they haven't had a format since the old KJCE-1370 was on the air years ago. Like the poster said up above even a Blues leaning Classic Soul format would possibly do well.

I would love for Austin to once again have a rythmic Dance format. Dance is way under rated on Austin radio and the only real dance you can here is on Hypersonic Radio with Jason Jenkins on 101x on Saturday nights. Jammin 105.9 should go more toward dance IMO.

How is well is the Sunset Valley translator received in Austin?

on 97.1, i just tried it is a translator station of 92.1 hutto (k-love) 98.5 is the translator of 99.3 thorndale (religious) both are fairly strong signals. 102.7 is the translator of llano's kity oldies. mornings fairly weak, afternoon fairly strong.

As far as classic Rock is concerned, you got 93.7 KLBJ. If they will stream online again. I remember always being able to pick them up in Dallas before a freak'n local spanish station took over the frequency.

classic rock

This is a possible hole. The question is how big is it?

Not a viable format anywhere except for satellite.

No longer a viable format. Maybe a more classic version of Bob would be a possibility. Kind of like what Cox is doing in San Antonio with KONO 101.

easy listening

No longer a viable format.

Not a viable format for a commercial station. Maybe they can add some jazz shows on KAZI or KMFA.

rythm and blues oldies

Is this like the old Jammin Oldies format?

classic country

Classic County has the same demographics problem as Oldies. The target audience is just too old to be viable on anything except a bad rimshot or coffee pot AM signal.

99.3 is a horrible signal.

Both 97.1 and 98.5 are spotty even a mile a or two from the tower. In addition to the signal issues they also have audio level and processing problems.

99.7 is really the only translator of much value.

A move-in from Oklahoma.

I wouldn't count on 105.9 for anything other than Spanish programming. As soon as the sale from Clear Channel goes through, I predict a quick change to a Spanish format of some kind.

I might would try out HD again if KHFI would put on a dance channel on HD-2, I cant believe they play the same format on KHFI HD-2 as they do on HD-1.

Don't get me started on getting Dance on KHFI-HD2. Not to beat a dead horse in the ground, but the Pride FM channel that is piped in from CC would be a good dance station for Jay Shannon to turn on and ignore like he does KHFI-HD 1 and 2 right now.

I really think that I would like to see more in the way of talk radio. I know, many of you on here are always asking for more music formats, but what I really want is more (and better) talk radio. There are several choices right now, but most of them aren't really choices. The Zone (KVET-AM) is imploding because of crappy management moves, ESPN 1560 isn't doing much better and 1260 is in Spanish. All of those are sports talkers anyways which leaves me cold most of the time. On the more newsy side you have KLBJ which does provide decent news coverage, but is loaded down with conservative claptrap most of the time. I do like the Jeff Ward show, mostly because it is local in origin and isn't that morning show with (gulp) Sergent Sam. 1370 is all syndicated conservative ilk and I don't even want to talk about the religious talk stations.

I would like to see one of two things....a second true news/talk station with an actual news staff and local talk talent that could compete with KLBJ or a good crazy FM talker shades of Live 105.3 in Dallas. Good local talk is really what I am looking for.

The station I really miss is 107.7 The Hawk and z102 I also wish we had an oldies station like KONO in San Antonio I was listening to the Llano station on 102.7 untill they changed to spanish Bob FM needs to change back to Oldies 103. I didn't know KNCT in Killeen was on 97.1 I I live in Westlake Hills and it doesn't come in.

Univision should pick up KFMK and either sell KLQB or change it to English-language so Taylor can have at least one station in English instead of both Taylor-licensed stations in Spanish.
