Austin's Beat tells listeners to switch to sister Kiss FM during commercials

If I were an advertiser I would not be too happy. Right before hitting the stop set the Beat said, "More music now on 96-7 Kiss FM, and in just minutes on the The Beat 102-3." Then they hit the first spot.

I know commercials can be tune outs, but instead of improving spot production you tell listeners to take a break and come back in a few minutes? That'll get customers through the doors.

Well both stations sound about the same,,,

I still also wouldn't agree if I was a advertiser.

I'm guessing not 1 in 100 listeners would even catch what was said.

My first thought after reading the title is that the Beat is planning on flipping formats.
But since they're telling people to switch for only a few minutes... Weird indeed, unless the PD of KPEZ hates commercials.

One reason why Austin's Clear Channel should not have a Hip-Hop station that will not put a lot of emphasis on it. Even though Hip-Hop is not that hot like Dance is right now, Austin still deserves a REAL Hip-Hop station, or a real Hip-Hop and R&B station. Something like how Hot 93.3 or the old Beat 104.3/104.9 used to be.

They need stations that are not afraid to add new music, and not have a hip hop station sounding just like a top 40 station.

Maybe KAZI could play more hip-hop? That's really not a bad station as it is though.

They do play real hip hop on Friday nights.

This isn't a new thing. Years ago, CC stations were encouraged to air "promos" for the other formats/stations in their local cluster. The thought was that you'd be moving your own cume around to your own properties vs sharing it with Emmis/Entercom, etc.

Makes sense if I'm a 6-24 yr old that likes pop and hip hop. However, if I'm listening to terrestrial radio, I'm keenly aware of 96.7 and 102.3...

With less is more in place, tho, I am surprised this non-music/talk unit is allowed.

Just like the 8 minute stop set; one more nail in the coffin of Radio as a financially viable means of broadcast communication.
I wish the owners and programmers would realize the sponsors, the listeners and the content creators are all valuable to the financial success of a radio station. The days of limited choices are long gone (Except for content creators... whose choices have declined drastically).

When CBS made its way into Austin in 1998, the original Beat (KQBT/KXBT era) was a better programmed rhythmic under its reign than the current one under CC's reign. This is based that while CBS Radio is a huge conglomerate from its Infinity days, they invest in their urban/rhythmic division like WVEE, WPGC, KSFM, WPEG, KZON and WJHM despite some of them driving away original audiences thanks to PPM and a format redirection as a result. KQBT did play some urban titles that did well with rhythmic audiences that KHFI never touched anyway, not to mention it complemented KJCE when it was an urban ac (that station did drop the then-PM drive Doug Banks Show after KQBT's launch). But unlike KAMX and KKMJ, KQBT had a financial setback which set off a six month format absence (KOYT); even Entercom and Univision were not interested in the format either as KXBT. This is despite both media corps having similar formatted stations elsewhere (ex. Entercom has WJMH and WNVZ).
