99.3 is KLGO and according to the ratings posted here.... they got a 0.6
 
Observations:
1. The Sammy-free KVET is sliding.
2. KHHL & KLQB both in the top 5. The market is changing.
3. CC's listener alienation plan for 105.9 is working.
4. Outside of 590, AM is dead in Austin.

You are completely right. Even 590 has some big problems at night too though. I was in Cedar Park over the weekend and after the power change, 590 is pretty bad on my very good aftermarket car radio and almost completely unusable on table and handheld radios. Cedar Park is not exactly out in the boonies either.

With the incredible success of Emmis' Indianapolis experiment of moving WIBC from AM to FM, it's not hard to see them doing the same thing in Austin with KLBJ. Another similarity between the two markets: they both had horrible ESPN affiliates (After WIBC moved to FM, Emmis flipped 1070 to ESPN).

I was listening to KHFI today and to be honest, it just sounds like an average top 40 station. Nothing really spectacular or special about it. Hot 93.3 may have cocky personalities, (calm down those werent my words, it was from an ex employee who told me that) but in my opinion the music is way better. But then again I'm reaching my mid 20's and not the demographic for KHFI.

The Reasons KHFI IS 5.4 And Hot 93.3 is only 3.4... For One KHFI Morning show is The Best in Austin. And Two who wants to listen to music all Morning Long. And then Every Top of the Hour Sorry Phone Jacks? I must Say He did have some good Phone Jacks and wanted me to tune in at Top of Hour. But when its Sorry Phone Jacks with no ending... I had to change the station.

I do think Hot 93.3 Mid Day show is doing Good (10-2). I don't know her name but she is a new and good DJ. She use to do Weekends. Hot 93.3 needs to make her There Morning Show and they will be good in Ratings.
 
I'm still amazed at how many Hiphop stations are around central texas, that play the same rotation.

KLBJ's nighttime issues go back decades. I recall in the late 60's-early 70's (when they were still KTBC) that outside the city 590 took a lot of pounding from a high power station in Santa Clara, Cuba at night. When the station was (then) off the air between 1 and 5 a.m., the Cuban was quite clear.

And of course Austin was a much, much smaller place back then. A big issue with AM's nowadays is that the nighttime power levels and signal patterns are totally inadequate to cover the entire market. That is the case with many, if not most mid to large city AM's.
