AUTOMATIC PHONE DIALER

I'm hoping someone out there might steer me to an inexpensive automatic phone dialer. What I want to do is use a contact closure to fire off an automatic phone dialer that will dial and call my number. I don't need the dialer to do anything else as I will know by the number calling me that there is a problem. Anybody have any ideas?

With all the AM stations failing could you use a transmitter remote? It should be really cheap just make sure you can get a copy of the manual. Also I saw an alarm system that had "mechanical" switches for the doors that might be modified for your use.

This is an automated silence sensor with dial-out capability. I haven't had a chance to play with it much (we're considering using it at KRKE to text me if there is more than a minute of dead air) but perhaps it can be adapted for what you want.

It's free, in any event ... so there's no harm in you looking at it.

I use the Pira silence sensor. It works great. It will email a text to your phone. Very handy.

How about a surplus PC and a dial up modem? There are probably somethings along this line in the junk room/box somewhere. A simple basic program could be cobbled together that could even do some tricks to give you an idea of what the alarm was.

The Pira software is pretty good for a low-cost silence sensor, but it does not appear to accept a contact closure to trigger an outgoing text. Unless someone has hacked it to work that way.

I suppose if you could come up with a control sequence that turns a contact closure into an interruption of audio, that would be something that would make the Pira behave more or less the way you want. Sometimes limitations are opportunities in disguise.

Broadcast Tools used to make a product called "VAD-2", which would accept closures and dial a number on a POTS line. It is discontinued, and the suggested replacement (WVRC-4 Plus) is pretty pricey and probably way overkill. If you can find a used VAD, that would cover your original requirements.

It does have a function to send an e-mail, and most (if not all) of the major wireless carriers have an e-mail address which converts the incoming message to SMS.

For example, if you put my wireless number as a 10-digit number (no punctuation) ahead of @txt.att.net, because my phone uses AT&T's network for coverage, I will receive the content of the e-mail as a text.

Having read the documentation (what little there is) and poking around in its settings, I see no reason why Pira cannot send a text in that manner.

We had to Pira silence sensor when I was at KIYU... we had an external speaker plugged into it and it was set to alarm with a voice saying "KIYU IS OFF THE AIR. ALERT GEORGE THE SUPER BEAGLE NOW" (HE WAS MY DOG) and it was turned up so loud id hear it on the 2nd floor (my apartment) even with the tv on)

We also had it set, i thijnk, to, notify us by text or email.. i think.. but i forget how we set that up

Pira will run a designated app when silence triggers it. You could hack together a quick and dirty app that would send a serial string to the port that talks to the modem causing it to dial.

This would be a simple project for an Arduino with an MP3-playback shield, an audio transformer, and a relay to connect the POTS line. (The MP3 file would contain the DTMF version of your phone number, plus any voice message you wanted to add.)

Came up with a simple answer. I got a silent sense module one of those stick on types. I have ordered a burglar alarm phone module that dials preprogramed numbers when it gets a relay closure. I'll simply program my phone number into the alarm module and hook a radio up to the silent sense module which will then activate the alarm module to dial me after a prescribed amount of silence. I'll know from the caller ID that it is a alarm as no one would be in the station at the time.
