Automation software question..

Hey gang;

I know an owner that is ungrading his automation software from Arrakis to Enco Systems. They say the Arrakis Systems works well and does what they need but customer support has been a headache. What are the pros and cons between these two systems?

Thanks.

The new Captain Digital looks very impressive. I recently emailed the Capt'n Digital team with a bunch of questions regarding the new software and I had an answer to all of my questions with in an hour. The built in scheduler is a bit primitive but would wok nice in a NCE or small market scenario. For less than a grand for just the software you can't go wrong.

Do they have a web site?

The Digilink system I had to use at one time was a total piece of crap. When the hard drive containing all the audio files gets too fragmented, the system chokes. Even worse is the fact that puppy requires you to take the system down to defrag it. The defragging process took anywhere from two to four hours!

That's really a nice looking system. At an entry point of $1000 for the software, it's comparable to PSI/NexGen 101 in many configurations. I've always appreciated Scott's 'free to DJ's' voicetrack software, too. Bring on the competition!

I engineer a college station and we're planing to upgrade our current system this summer. I have a purchase order in the approval process for PSI101 but may wait until Captian Digital comes out with a demo. I emailed Capt'n Digital the other day and inquired about if they had a demo version and was told that a demo was in the works.

Can't wait to see it in action.

> wonder how much support will be for the capt digital??that would be a big concern.i'm sure they will offer different levels.nothing is mentioned on the web site about it.nexgen is 24/7 ,should you ever need it.

Here is what Doug Raines wrote in response to my email about the support options for the Capt'n Digital.

Quoting: "We offer support for $1000.00 a year, that gives you as much support as
you need durning business hours, and an after hours off the air emergency
number."

Last I checked 24/7 support for NexGen101 was a grand total of $300/year.

Nothing against Cap'n Digital, but I know NexGen, and I can truly say it's the most reliable, easy to use automation I have ever laid hands on.

That said, I really want to try Cap'n Digital...we're looking at a new automation system here in the next 12 to 18 months. Our outdated Maestro system will hopefully end up being someone else's headache.

I wish NexGen would pre-load music on HD, that would be awesome!

Talk about having one's family jewels in a vise! I had emailed a station about CD, but at that price for support they're going to lose a sale. Smaller operators aren't going to pony up that kind of money when other players charge something more reasonable. Besides, from what I've heard others say about compatibilty with other Scott stuff in the past I doubt that the well informed would jump to it in a hurry.

I'm still evaluating programs for a station and Nexgen is a strong contender.

We use Nexgen Digital version 2.04.12.04 Awesome system. Have you heard of Master Control or UDS? UDS is good for the budget, and fantastic support. Bullet Proof as well.

I’ll concur with the UDS2 system. We have been using it since the early 1990’s, first as a CD Jukebox control system and presently using MP3 / WAV files. UDS2 is a Linux server based system and is highly reliable. On the rare occasions something goes wrong, SMARTS / On Air Digital offers quick support to restore the system. The system will allow you to connect production room PC’s to the server allowing you to have access to all the audio files and to add new ones via RadioSuite Explorer. You can use Adobe Audition or whatever your favorite MP3 / WAV file editor is, for production.

'Ol Dave's "New" program is just like just about everything else he has and that is vaporware. This program is a custom GUI on the Barrcode software from the UK (www.barrcode.com). The last I heard it ws not available yet. but then that was a few weeks ago. Knowing Dave, howeverm if someone buys it, they will knock it out in a timely fashion.
