Autotune Everything (Quasi -Quality Vocals)... D.O.A.

FLO RIDA DEFINITELY DOES NOT need to autotune himself. Why did he do it?

http://www.wat.tv/audio/david-guetta-nicki-minaj-flo-3l5kt_2zicp_.html

I believe that in this case, David Guetta and Nicki Minaj would've been alright alone without the autotuned Flo Rida. Another dance song you wont hear me play (unless, of course, I'm paid to).

At least Nicki Minaj didn't (over) autotune her raps. Both Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj do not need to use autotune if they aren't doing any style of singing outside of what they normally do because they actually sound decent as they are with their typical natural flowing styles.

I once got tired of autotune, but now I'm SERIOUSLY getting tired of it, especially if it's poorly done over a weak, boring electro beat that a three year old could make with dumb lyrics being autotuned over it. THIS David Guetta instrumental production is NOT dumb, but much of that electro-house-hip hop autotuned stuff is. I understand Jay-Z's "D.O.A." now.

Or... if we must autotune everything, then people should learn to recognize that there are many ways in which to utilize autotune so it sounds good. Everyone doesn't have to try to either sound like T-Pain or the 2007-2008 version of Lil Wayne.

I shouldn't complain too much though because it could be worse. Yes, we had that little phase where everyone thought it was cool to just leave out hi hats, and now we have thoughtless lyrics & unnecessary autotune on (seemingly another) upswing, but despite the fact that we've gone downhill since the passing of the new millennium, it still seems like things have been somewhat slowly improving, overall, since 2010.

Does anyone remember back in the 90's and before when even the meaningless tunes actually were well produced and had some meaning and feel to them? Maybe we do need a rock/alternative come back in America and dominate the charts to bring some lyrical sense & meaning back into swing.... or will that just become corrupted, to?

KDM, I think you're pretty much the only person on this board whose concerned.
Most of us on here are Dance fans and aren't concerned if 50 Cent, Flo Rida, or (gasp!) the Backstreet Boys are releasing mediocre Dance/Pop records.
When it's decent stuff from them or from J.LO, Chris Brown, or Rihanna we're all for it, but as Dance fans we tend to listen to lots records and artists not associated with the Top 40/Rhythm charts.

There's plenty of Dance records out there that don't use the same template that's popular on the CHR charts:

You're mostly correct, as most of the electro stuff with an autotuned rapper over it will never see the full light of day on mainstream radio. BUT, it is still being played, especially at clubs, and while board dance fans may not care or have to deal with it, the fact still remains that the general public will hear this stuff and judge by it. The artists and producers who create this stuff may think it's cool now, but wait until they look back on it a few years later...

I admit, I kind of overreacted to a short series of things I heard ON THE RADIO very early this morning, but the point is that other people heard it too and... I'm sure they aren't now thinking "wow - we need to explore this sound MORE!!".

Also, I'm not sure if you all are aware of the amount of mixtapes all over the net full of this electro-hip hop autotune rap-singing stuff. I don't see this as becoming classic material that we will look back on and say "ahhh that was hot! No wonder we had such a nice, long run". Hopefully the more real dance sound that this board mostly appreciates begins to take over before the last memory of this generation is "a bunch of whiny uptempo autotuned crap"
