Avalon M-5 or the 737?

Is there a difference, besides price?

I don't believe the M5 has a gate. The 737 has the bells n whistles..but is it all needed?

The M-5 is strictly a Preamp...and it sounds amazing...

In fact, if you look closely in the background of that Joe Cipriano video clip, you'll notice that's what he's using for his mic.

It has no compressor, and no gate...

The 737 is a great box...it has fantastic compression, from warm and fuzzy, to tight and snappy.

The EQ is terrific for most voiceover applications...and the thing has more headroom than you'll ever need.

HOWEVER...it's EXTREMELY LOUD. In other words...if you're planning on using this in any situation other than a completely DEAD QUIET voiceover booth...well...then you're blowing your money.

Because, the real secret to using a wonderful tube pre like the Avalons, is to get that nice, edgy, tube distortion...and in order to get that, you've got to drive the input stage pretty hard.

And when you do that...well...your voice sounds great...but so will your neighbor's refrigerator 3 floors above you. And the dog barking a block away...

In other words...every noise will be amplified...so, if you wanna go big...just make sure you can do it in a really quiet space.

And if you've got a killer voiceover booth already, and the cash money to spend on an Avalon...then, go for it!

And be sure to post your results.

Actually i think he's using the la4 on his mic. Look closely.

Well, he DOES have an LA-4...but, look to the left of it...and sitting there, with the distinctive Blue front panel light, is an Avalon M-5...the meter is hard to see, because the light is out...which is a common problem with the AValon pres...

But he's going through that first, and then into the UREI...

Thanks for letting me know what that was next to his M5 though...I was looking for it...I thought it was some old UREI or Universal Audio box...but couldn't for the life of me find a picture that matched.

I emailed Joe about his chain. It's posted to the site... He uses the U87/M5 combo for promo work.

For radio he'll patch to the LA-4 for some "oomph". He's got a dead quiet room. All equip; pc's, etc, are in another room. He said an engineer at FOX built the rooms for him. Nice, huh?

I'm in my basement...with some Auralex on the walls..but not much. Couldn't I sidechain the M5 to my Symetrix 528, using the gate on that box?

I'm thinking of either the M5, 737, LA610 or the ISA-220. All are in the same price range.

Regarding the 737...George Robinson www.georgerobinsonvoices.com uses the U87/737 combo sidechained to a 528. He's just recently switched to a TLM103/ISA-220 combo. Likes it better.

Then...I came across this box the other day...it's pricey though.. Millennia Media HV-3 mic preamp

Mike what are your thoughts?

You could sidechain out for the 528...the gate on it is solid...I use one myself.

I actually have an ISA 220. I like it alot...a whole lot.

I hit that from my 416 Shotgun, then go out of the ISA into a 528 for the gate...then into ProTools or whatever.

I don't use much of the compression or EQ on the ISA anymore...although, when I want a little sumpin' sumpin' on my voice for radio, I do roll up the compression a bit more.

On the road, I'm using the P-Solo from True Systems...it sounds fantastic. No compression or anything like that, but I just add that in if necessary once the VO is in ProTools.

If you have a good relationship with someone at a place like Guitar Center, or some local Pro Audio shop, I suggest getting your hands on everything you can and try it out.

What works for me, or Joe, or anyone else, might not necessarily work for you.

Rock on,

Mike B
