Some of the folks on the Howie Carr ping list I do for Free Republic are remembering that Avi was not necessarily a social conservative; he was anti-busing, and more of a libertarian a la Brudnoy. I really can't remember much of that book I'd read, it was so long ago. (The author, Murray Levin, may have passed on awhile back). Here was a post I did for FR:
Yes maybe Avi was more libertarian than conservative but I will say I think he was active in the GOP and may have run for office. It's in the past and I can't remember everything. By the way up until '86 or so I hadn't really heard talk radio but it was then that I started working for the post office
and discovered WRKO, especially Jerry W. I started to drift to the right after that. While Jerry was considered liberal in many ways, he talked about "statists", hacks and cronies, et al...government waste...the seat belt issue, New Braintree, etc.
And of course it was fun when some writer for the Herald
named Howie Carr would join him and Barbara Anderson for
"The Governors" on Tue. afternoon. Howie started doing fill-ins for Jerry and I'd tune in at 2 pm (I think the
show was 2-6 back then) and hear him say, "Good afternoon,
New England, this is Howie Carr from the Boston Herald
filling in for the Dean today"...and I found that while
Jerry was good, I enjoyed Howie even more...
I also found myself listening to some shows on WMRE 1510
(which went off air in Jan. of '87, I believe) including trivia with Morgan White Jr., and Bob Katzen's nightly
show (there's someone who was later frequently on 'RKO,
doing his own weekend show for awhile but also of course
on with Jerry. "Here's Bob Katzen from the Beacon Hill
Roll Call, or 'Bugle Call Rag', maybe we should call it...")
"Stay on top. 1510...WMRE" I actually attended the farewell
party for WMRE (they got sold and went "dark" for awhile)
which was held at the Breakfast Club just down the street
from Fenway (Brookline & Boylston?). Katzen was there.
Even Christopher Lydon stopped by, IIRC.
