Awesome 99.5 flips to 99.5 Streetz

So how bad is Hot's signal in Spartanburg? Do they really need that 94.1 translator? They might consider using that for Streetz, too. I'm sure there's a way they can figure out how to make it legal for one of their HD channels to rebroadcast

I don’t go to Spartanburg that often but it’s fairly shaky. It’s right next to 97.9 WPEG from Charlotte which is stronger in that area and the strong 98.3 translator cuts in too. The 94.1 signal is really a Greer/Duncan/Lyman signal more than anything.

I had thought they should give 94.1 to Streetz, but there’s actually a lot of overlap in the main contours of 94.1/99.5. I’m not an engineer but I’m pretty sure 94.1 is almost as far east as a translator for commercial 107.3 can be since I believe the translator’s 60dbu has to be within the parent station’s. Anyone that knows more about the FCC rules able to confirm?

I was able to do a little research. This is why 94.1 is stuck where it is, per the FCC:

A fill-in translator is required to maintain its service contour within the service contour of the primary station. For a Class A, C3, C2, C1, C0 (C-zero), C, or noncommercial educational Class B, B1, or D FM primary station, the fill-in translator station must maintain its 60 dBu (1 mV/m) F(50,50) service contour within the 60 dBu contour of the primary station. … The distances to the primary station and translator station contours are to be predicted using the standard contour prediction method in 47 CFR Section 73.313, using as many radials as necessary to accurately locate the contours.

Here’s the original PDF map for the 94.1 application where they had to show 94.1 would broadcast inside the 107.3 contour https://enterpriseefiling.fcc.gov/d...tachment/6ae8bf9b-40a9-7238-00c7-832f9b15db75

Hopefully this helps explain why 94.1 is stuck where it is and Summit can’t really get their stations any further in to Spartanburg. Maybe they could slightly more if they dropped the power and moved it SW, but I doubt it would be worth it. 🙂

I noticed Streetz has the exact same imaging as Hot 104.5 in Knoxville. I know the male is Milk Styles. Anyone know who the female is? If i'm correct, I think 95.7 JAMZ Birmingham is also the same. Also, out of curiosity, who is the PD? I saw someone mention he is Dede Mcguire's brother.

I am not sure it's a fill-in when the translator is not co-owned. Might be, not sure. I think you just have to be able to pick it up off the air and have permission of the primary station. 94.1 is not owned by Summit.

I'm sure Summit could figure out how to make that happen if they really wanted to put Streetz on 94.1 in Spartanburg. After all, when WORD was on 106.3, Audacy just put it on several HD channels and used translators in different areas. WORD was on WSPAs HD 2 and WFBCs HD 4. Each was feeding different translators legally.

A translator can be owned by a third party, however if it is not fill-in, it cannot receive financial support from the station.

WORD was able to get the extra translators outside of 106.3's 60dbu because they (obviously) owned the class C parent stations feeding the translators and all of the signals were within 93.7 and 98.9's 60dbu. 107.3 is the only signal Summit has that's in HD with basically a full market signal. Most of the upstate commercial translators are or were owned by Tower Above/Ted McCall who leases them out, I'm pretty sure the signal for 94.1 would be further east if possible, they're no stranger to signing on translators.

Interesting, Hot 104.5 is or was a rhythmic CHR so it seems like their imaging would be more like Hot 98.1. If trades are up to date, Maurice DeVoe is the PD of WJMZ and he has an airshift on WHZT and also appears to have a role with Summit on a higher level.

These are some sales breakdowns of the cluster too. If Awesome was 40% 55+, no wonder it’s gone: https://static1.squarespace.com/sta...39215/SummitMedia_Greenville_MediaKit2023.pdf

Mychal Maguire is now the PD.
Milk Styles imaging is fresh and hype! Perfect choice! The additional female voice over I believe is Stichiz from 103.5 The Beat in Miami.

Summit might want to adjust the RDS on 99.5 and the logo/name on WJMZ-HD3, since both are saying things like “21 Savage on Awesome 99.5” LOL. And the logo and info on the HD3 for 107.3 is still showing Awesome as well.

One thing The Block may have going for them is personalities. I believe a few are local, and they also have Kelly Mac middays who was very popular on WJMZ for many years, and some of the personalities like QL and Lovely Big O do remotes and have community involvement. The Block should air The Breakfast Club in full and ditch Steve Harvey or maybe move him to early mornings like TBC is now. Other than adding a morning show (maybe), Summit isn’t going to put anyone on 99.5 even voicetracked. It will be a jukebox with (likely) no promotion, so even though it sounds good, I don’t know how well it will do because most won’t know it exists, just like it was with Awesome.

If they were smart, they’d promote STREETZ on JAMZ to bring listeners over since they now have an Urban duo. The Block airing Steve Harvey is to bite at JAMZ i’d assume. Never understood why mainstream Urban Hip-Hop/R&B stations aired Harvey in the Mornings. It will be Dede likely or possibly Young Joc for mornings on STREETZ. Where is JJ Solomon nowadays?
